Sport button "doing" anything after Cat/Exhaust install...

Hey everyone,

We just installed AWE high-flow cats and exhaust on my car last night and I've noticed something interesting today. Previously I had Tubi headers, stock cats, and Tubi exhaust and the Sport button made a noticeable difference in throttle mapping.

Now, after installing AWE High-Flow cats and exhaust last night to go along with my Tubi headers the Sport button doesn't appear/feel to do a darn thing.

Any thoughts? AWE's response was the cats make such a huge difference that it effectively takes "away" the Sport mode. Seems odd to me, so I was wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.

Carl

i know for the gt3, the sport button remaps the the throttle as well as has a vacuum switch for bypassing the side mufflers. does the S have a similar vacuum hose for the mufflers? remapping on your S should sitll exist

I am guessing myself now. I have about 15 miles on my fabspeed cats, mufflers and suncoast headers. I only drive in sport mode but tomorrow I'll check for myself. Thanks for the excuse to take my car out tomorrow!

It is hard to believe that a change to exhaust would change the feel of the re-mapped exhaust. In sport mode, the engine speed is twice as high (I think) for a given accelerator input than non-sport mode. So this should be noticeable regardless of what exhaust system you have.

I know. That's my feelings on the subject. AWE feels their high-flow cats may make a huge difference, because they make huge power, but that feels suspect to me. Just because the headers/cats/exhaust are flowing better that shouldn't take away the affect of the fun...I mean Sport button.

did you flash the software also? If so, it lessens the difference between sport and no sport

No, no flash on the software yet. Just headers, cats, and exhaust.

There is no reason a muffler change would have any impact on the rate of throttle response. If reflashing the software isn't the cause as suggested above, ask them if they reset your ECU and or readapted your TB. Both should be done...

sounds like a whole lot of nonsense! AWE just ruined their reputation for me

if that's how they are handling problems, I'd rather do business with another company

I did not feel any difference since my exhaust change. I tried today after exhaust change last week and the sport button has the same effect with throttle response as always.

Thank you for checking for me, and it's interesting to hear that others aren't having the same experience. I'm interested if anyone else has a cat/exhaust setup they can try as well.

Reset the ECU? How is that done?

Whoa. Gentleman, there is A LOT of misinformation in this thread.

If you have a sport exhaust with a vacuum flapper, it is disconnected and NOT used with our exhaust. You simply plug the vac. line and be done with it.

Our entire system WILL make more power over the stock. You don't have to be a mechanical engineer to see how we achieve that. Our cat sections do provide the most power of all the 3 components. We have dyno sheets that show all of this.

Lastly, the more agressive mapping in the sport mode DOES NOT CHANGE when you use our exhaust, or anyone aftermarket exhaust for that matter. It WILL still be there when you hit the button. More agreesive timing maps and sharper throttle response!

I hope this helps clear the air. I am not sure how that all was lost in the translation. Either way, if you have questions, PLEASE call or email me.

Here is more data so you can see what component made the biggest impace.

Stock Mufflers vs AWE Tuning Mufflers

(Above) Swapping in AWE Tuning mufflers for the stock muffler results in a nice gain in power. Gains at the power peaks were 4.4 wheel hp and 4.6 wheel torque. Using a 1.16 correction factor, this results in gains of ~5.1 crank hp and 5.3 crank tq.

Stock Mufflers vs AWE Tuning Mufflers, Graphed Differences

(Above) Graph of measured differences between baseline and test in dyno sheet of 997S stock mufflers vs AWE Tuning mufflers. The AWE Tuning mufflers produced a maximum increase of 8 wheel hp at 4500 rpms and 9.5 wheel torque at 4500 rpms vs. the stock mufflers. Using a 1.16 correction factor, this results in gains of ~9.3 crank hp and 11 crank tq, with a broad increase of power across the powerband.

Stock Mufflers and Cats vs AWE Tuning Mufflers and Hi-Flow Cats

(Above) Swapping in AWE Tuning mufflers and Hi-Flow cat sections for the stock muffler and cat sections results in a major gain in power. Gains at the power peaks were 27.4 wheel hp and 31.6 wheel torque. Using a 1.16 correction factor, this results in gains of ~31.8 crank hp and 36.7 crank tq!

Stock Mufflers and Cats vs AWE Tuning Mufflers and Hi-Flow Cats, Graphed Differences

(Above) Graph of measured differences between baseline and test in dyno sheet of 997S stock mufflers and cats vs AWE Tuning mufflers and Hi-Flow cats. The AWE Tuning mufflers and Hi-Flow cats produced a maximum increase of 32 wheel hp at 4800 rpms and 36 wheel torque at 4500 rpms vs. the stock mufflers. Using a 1.16 correction factor, this results in huge gains of ~37.1 crank hp and 41.8 crank tq, with a very broad increase of power across the powerband.

Stock Mufflers and Cats vs AWE Tuning Mufflers and Hi-Flow Cats

(Above) Swapping in AWE Tuning mufflers, Hi-Flow cat sections, and merge collector headers for the stock muffler and cat sections results in another substantial gain in power. Gains at the power peaks were 33.7 wheel hp and 26.8 wheel torque. Using a 1.16 correction factor, this results in a total gain of ~39.1 crank hp and 31.1 crank tq for the AWE Tuning 997S Exhaust System vs stock. While the addition of the AWE Tuning headers results is a slight loss of torque vs our mufflers and cats with the stock headers, the gain of 6.3 wheel hp (7.3 crank hp) adds a big bump in power at the sweet spot of this engine.

Stock Mufflers, Cats, and Headers vs AWE Tuning Mufflers, Hi-Flow Cats, and Headers Graphed Differences

(Above) Graph of measured differences between baseline and test in dyno sheet of 997S stock mufflers, stock cats, and stock headers vs AWE Tuning mufflers, AWE Tuning Hi-Flow cats, and AWE Tuning headers. The AWE Tuning mufflers, Hi-Flow cats, and headers produced a maximum increase of 33.7 wheel hp at 6750 rpms and 37 wheel torque at 4200 rpms vs. the stock mufflers, cats, and headers. Using a 1.16 correction factor, this results in huge gains of ~39.1 crank hp and 42.9 crank tq, with an increase of power across virtually the entire powerband.

Thanks for all the info! Maybe you should just fire the guy who told the crap to Hoeferland

There can't be room for someone handling complaints that way in a company apparently that proud about their products.

Actually my guy did not pass along the wrong info. What he said was correct, it was just that someting was lost in the translation when the info was passed to Hoeferland.

No worries. I just wanted to clear the air.
