Question Registering a New Car in California

Hi All,

I am in LA and bought a brand new 997S from Pennsylvania.
I paid all the tax and title of carlifornia to the dealership and they said they will handle everything.
After the car arrived, they said I need to do smog and vin verification suddently. They asked me to go to a Police station to do it. What the?
Anyone here have any experience to buy a new car from out of state and what do you need to do to help them to have your car to get register correctly in California?
Thanks for your help

i bought my car from texas. when i purchased the car, i paid for CA tax up front. then, the dealership forwarded all my into to my local DMV office. i then went to DMV, paid the registration and showed them the CA emissions sticker and VIN #. 10 minutes later i got my plates and tags.

I too bought a Texas car last year.

Simply took the bill of sale and smog cert to the DMV for registration and licensing (and of course paid what's called 'Use Tax'; same as sales tax). They did a VIN confirmation at the DMV.

Don't do it, dude. I've learned my lesson on that. California SUCKS when it comes to buying new cars from out of state.

If it's a new car 50 state car (and never been registered in any state) I don't think you need to do the smog test drill nor any VIN verification. The selling dealer should be working w/ the CA DMV if the car was 'brand new'.

As far as I know only out-of-state used cars require an initial smog test/inspection no matter how old they are.
