dyno rant

One of the things that we all enjoy about these forums is the give/take of information. What is frustrating to me is the number of people who are absolutely going to pre & post (modification) dyno their cars, but we never hear from them again. This seems to be a particular issue on 6speed (the plenum thread comes to mind). People have claimed to schedule appointments, but then they go dark.

If you are going to share performance results with us - great – we love you for it, but why say it if you are not going to follow through?

I’ll now step down from my soapbox.

Some people might not want to waste money for a anymore if they can noticably feel the differnece after a mod. It's really up to them if they want to dyno or not. It's not like getting dyno runs are free. That's my 2 cent.

Wouldn't the pre dyno step take place prior to the "it feels good enough" (i.e. butt dyno) assessment?

Rick, I agree with you 100% I am going to Dyno my car with a buddy with a bone stock 997S (same year, similar milage) and we want to find out if all the "stuff" that I have makes a real difference or if it is just wonderful noise makers. I think that I have made some increases with mine, however the question is how much of an increase did these bolt on items make, at what cost per hp/tq. I don't think that we will be able to make our schedules work until mid April. I will post the results regardless of what happens, as I want to know as much as the next guy if these mods are worth while.

BTW I tried to convince another friend that has the X51 package to come out, but he isn't interested in his car's power as someone has already posted a dyno from there X51 on another forum.

sure you can't hide from numbers but to me i have a bone stock 997s after putting in the plenum i noticed smoother revs from 1st gear to 3rd gear. It no longer feels like it stutter on low rpm. To me that's enough of a mod. Sure it may not get the manufacture claims. I don't relaly care about that. The car pulls a lot harder now than before so i am satisfy but others may not. So to each their own.

I feel that a dyno is just a test and omits certain aspects of normal driving conditions like climate . Sometimes numbers are merely a tool to compare things but for me the real enjoyment of modding a car is noticing its change and owning a vehicle which is personalized and a little more unique .

I have modded several cars . I have never dyno tested any . I do feel that there is a noticiable difference . That's what's most important to me . I am not saying that I would refuse a dyno test ,nor am I criticizing anyone who wants to have the data - only that my enjoyment isn't measured by what's revealed on paper , but rather how much fun I have when I am at the steering wheel .

Just to be clear, I'm not advocating dynoing; I'm advocating follow-through. If you are not going to dyno your car (like me for instance - I'm not dynoing), don't set expectations.

but the point is it's still up to the owner to follow through or not. What if he doesn't have time anymore . Sure he set expectations but it's still his decisions to follow throu or not.

I do dynoes before and after all of my mods and I always use the same dyno shop.
The reason I do it is so I dont sound like a punk saying I get 20 hp from a cold air intake. I know for a fact on "MY" car I only gained 3 hp peak but had a healthy gain along the middle of the RPM band.

I think allot of people dont post their dynoes because they are embarrassed that they spent good money on promises that did not pan out.

Just my opinion.

Maybe they spend a ton of money and are embarrased to follow through with the dyno.

You mean that you don't get 20hp from a CAI!

I just read the plenum thread . I think the thread went a bit sideways when the "butt dyno" display was the rear end of the blond woman --kinda distracting , It somewhat made the plenum seem insignificant for amoment but who knows maybe someone will want to post more .

On the Turbo board there's another thread . No blond woman though .
I'm not sure I can add it to my car until I find out if its compatable with my current setup (probably is though). I'm talking about the plenum --I already have a beautiful woman . I do wonder if it can fit as engine space is a little tight . In my 997tt the engine/exhuat setup is the following : GIAC ECU, Werks 1 intake , evo intercoolers. evo headers, Tubi exhaust. The werks1 takes up some space and I'm not sure how the plenum will fit.

Actually, Rick, I recently had a similar complaint towards a poster on RL so maybe I owe you an explanation. For my part, I had origionally suggested to RPM that I would bring my car over for dyno, install, dyno. In discussion with them, it seemed that while they would do the install, I was expected to foot the bill for the dynoing. Since it was to their benefit if the dyno worked out, I felt that was too costly for my purposes. Looking back, it cost me 120$ for the installation at my guys, so their offer was really quite fair. Another factor is that I am not entirely certain of the reliablity, validity, repeatability and safety of running my car on a dyno. Bottom line, I withdrew my offer. I cannot speak for anyone else who disappointed you. My point is this: go back and re read RRS's postings. Then read the subjective responses by those guys who put their money up front. 800$ is a good piece of change to me. An additional 150-200 doesn't make it any easier. You are coming across as whiny and preachy. What you really want, I guess, is a guarantee that the piece works. Discuss this w RRS (the manufacturer) and proceed as you think best. Since you have already said you are not going to dyno, you may have to base the results on whether the car pulls better w the plenum or not. There was an article in Excellence before and after a Cargraphic (?) modding. Dyno showed little, driver on track noted a good "seat of pants" result and a significant increase in speed at the end of a familiar straightaway. Who knows better? Beats me.

A lot of things can make a car feel different that don't really equal more power. Also dyno's are only good for telling you if you have improved or not under a certain set of parameters. They are very useful tools, but often mis understood.

I understand the complaint about lack of follow through. OTOH if they had followed through we'd be watching flame wars about the dyno results!

On the "give and take of information" Rick is obviously a taker.
