New M3 experience?
Here's one listed at $97,000....

!
All that being said, the times are impressive. But they only match (or slightly beat depending on the comparisons) our 4 year old (in design) 997S. Seems more like a lateral move for a BMW, which many wouldn't make, given that they already own the Porsche.
Now if the BMW had the GTR's performance figures and had no ridiculous mark-up... that would be a different story.

I looked at that sticker and it does not show that it has direct fuel injection...if that's the case then the '09 M3 (if direct injected) may have an addl 20-40 hp more...

Whether or not the GTR sells for list or not is irrelevant. That M3 with its $97K price tag performs the same as a four-year old 997S, if not only slightly better. It won't smoke it, that's for sure.
That's not enough justification for me to trade/sell my car.

$97,000.00 prices for 2008 M3's will dissapear soon enough my friend.
I wouldn't be running to trade my 997S for the new M either BUT if I were in the market for a new car and $70,000 got a loaded new M (as in that sticker before the insane m/u) , I would give it careful consideration for sure. I look forward to driving the new M as soon as I'm able. I have a feeling when I see my first one on the road and if it's all black I'm gonna really like it
.
Thanks.

.Porsche's performance/dollar ratio is getting really bad now. They've pretty much alienated the Boxster and Cayman at this point, since they are at competitive price points with BMW Z/M3, but don't hold a candle to their performance. Oh well, money talks.... hopefully Porsche will get its act together before they hit another slump like they did in the early 90's.
This, I think, we both agree on. The price of a new Porsche, in light of all the new competition from uber sedans such as BMW's M3 and AMG's c63, seems pretty hefty.

There's a reason Porsche has the highest profit per vehicle.
I went and saw the new M3 coupe today at a local dealership. It looked fantastic in person imho...better than I thought it would. Also, the dealers here in the Seattle area are selling them at sticker...no additional markup. But they are already looking at this summer or beyond before production date due to there already being a lineup for the production slots. That said, I am going to hold on to my 997. Only thing I hate with my 997 is that it has a thing for the rear tires getting ruined. I got back from vacation and noticed the driver's rear had low air pressure. I drove it to the gas station around the corner VERY slowly and by the time I got there the tire unseated from the lip of the wheel. Luckily it appears the HRE wheel (only have had them for a month) got spared, but I will not know until I jack the car up on Wednesday and take the tire/wheel off. I really hope it did not get ruined...I am more concerned about it getting bent as of this point.
This is the third tire to get ruined for the 6 months I have owned the car. Luckily, after the first one blew I bought road hazard on all tires since.

Its all a matter of luck that's for sure! Could go either way with any car.

I no interest whatsoever in the new M3. It looks very bland to me - inside and out.
I'd much rather have an S5 even if the M3 is light years faster.
For that matter for a daily I'd try and find a GT-R before the M3.
I loved the E46 M3 but the new one just leaves me cold.

RE050A N0 spec. One time it was a nail, one time the sidewall got a gash in it, and this time I dunno...will find out on Wednesday when I take the wheel off.

I don't buy Porsches to save money . In fact I expect to pay more for the car than the competition . To me the Porsche 911 is my way of capturing a piece of automotive history stretched over decades . The sophistication of the car, lack of blind spot , timeless design, and high speed confidence is a class of its own .
It could just be random. I have much more satisfaction with the Michelins but have run the Bridegestomes, Pirelli's , Continental, and a few others in the past . After 7 Porsches I am accustomed to tires being a price of the toy but you may find taht it may be worth it to swap brand on the rubber.
MSRP to MSRP a moderately equipped 997S will run 90 . That's 20K difference . Throw in discounts or markups and the gap narrows . In fact we could play the high low comparison too where a new M3 costs 97K and a used 997S costs 65K.
Even better for the 1/4 mi obsessed . How about a 996tt weekend car and lease a 135 (daily) and still have change in the pocket?
