Congrats on the new 997!

I would recommend also doing a search on this one because "Break-in" or "Break in" has been discussed many times.

Good luck... it will arrive soon!

One can follow the manual
OR
Gear your beginning miles more towards pampering the car with an occasional sprint. Learn the car and allow it to learn your driving style.

If I recall from the manual: vary the RPM's but do not exceed 4200 RPM's for 2000 miles. Anyway, just read your manual it's in there.

Warm it up and then test the rev limiter to make sure it works.

This is what the owners manual recommends and I am painfully suffering through right now.

Do a search, you'll find a lot of people that swear the owners manual is a bunch of hooey and a lot of people that swear the only way to maximize power and engine life is to follow the owner's manual.

Either way.. an early congratulations. Enjoy it in good health.

Enjoy your ride. I've got 500 miles to go to get to the magic 2000 miles. I've driven the car past 4200 RPM a few times during the break-in period and it seems to be doing just fine. Just don't abuse it.

follow the manual. if porsche wants the car broken in that way there must be a reason. 2k miles will be over in a couple of moths and then you can romp on it.

Well, I'm glad to see we have so many talented comedians here....

I will err on the side of caution. I don't need an oil burner. Thanks for the advice.

Good idea, that is what I did. It is pretty easy to take the car on some long drives to get the miles up and enjoy the car, just vary the revs a bit (4th, 5th and 6th gear are all usable at legal highway speeds) and try to vary the speeds.

just an interesting point-i have also owned several new airplaines-the engine makers (lycoming and continental) want you to operate the engines for the first 25 hrs at max power (firewall the throttle) to get optimum break-in. if you don't, you can get bad seating of the rings, which will give you an oil burner (due to the resulting blow by). i just bring this up as although airplanes and cars have engines, they have oposite break-in procedures (airplane=maximum throttle first 25 hrs, car decreased throttle first 2000 hrs). i have never been able to figure out why the diference. i would say though, that after having various porsches, i think 2000 hrs is a bit excessive-common sense would tell you that by 1000 hrs, things should be broken in.
