Official info on 997 with PDK
My ex-993 Carrera S. The one I should have kept.
What was Porsche thinking? To finally come out with PDK and then screw it up with buttons!
They are somewhat like paddles:
"The driver of a new 911 Carrera with PDK transmission is able to use the very helpful functions of the double-clutch transmission either via gearshift paddles on the steering wheel spokes of the newly developed PDK steering wheel measuring 370 millimetres or 14.6'' across or through the selector lever in the centre console also coming in new design. The steering wheel in its sporting three-spoke design features two ergonomically arranged gear -shift paddles operated by pressing either forwards or backwards and thus allowing precise and intuitive use in all positions of the steering wheel. Pressing the paddles from the front, the driver shifts up, pressing the paddles from behind the steering wheel, he shifts down to a lower gear. In either case it is irrelevant whether the driver uses the right or left paddle."

they are NOT buttons! Go check out the Porsche site and you will see in the mini movie and read you push and pull the PDK paddles. Go read all the info on the new features of the 2009 then take the test at the end. Plus you can do this with the paddles with either hand so that if you are in a turn you have an option. Or you can push and pull the stick to change gears simular to the GT3RSR race cars.
Porsche are making a mistake with this paddle "push pull" arrangement IMO. I've got an M5, a Golf GTI and a Lambo all with paddles, pull right for up and left for down. Many PDK buyers will also have another car with paddles with this conventional set up. Now I've got to think each time I change gear? Not a smart move....
Blame marketing
They wanted to be different, so chose the second best option of putting "puddles" on the wheel, rather than paddles attached to the column.
The shifter itself is also a** backwards - push forward for + and pull back for -. It's the same as the Audi "Hillary" TT.

Bet my wife wouldn't even notice the difference.
