Is sport exhaust necessary on Carrera S

I understand that the S engine has a butterfly valve that opens above 4K RPM and lets the sound really rip - why the PSE, then?

comments, please

The PSE provides additional noise by bypassing part of the mufflers, and isn't limited to 4k RPM. I installed mine yesterday and like it.

I meant on the '09. My understanding is that the earlier Carrera S's don't have the valve and PSE is a very nice feature because of that - I'm just wondering why pay $2500 on the '09 S's for PSE

I wouldn't bother unless you insist on being able to shut off the sound at times. Otherwise, there are great aftermarket options that offer better sound and save weight.

+1 on the aftermarket, PSE is a very expensive option, think of it as a $2500 baseball card (hockey for those that live in Canada) in the spokes of your bike. Sounds cool, but offers nothing for performance.

Good analogy.

PSE does sound VERY nice though.

To be fair, we have no idea if the PSE is necessary on the new 997S as nobody has heard one with or without the PSE option.

On the current 997S, the PSE is desirable as it improves the sound of the car immeasurably but not 'necessary'. It also adds weight and makes no additional power. Aftermarket systems such as AWE add power and sound.

Agree with comment to buy PSE if you want your car stock, or as some would say - unmolested by mods. You get to choose when the car is loud, and when it is more tame.

If mods are like molesting a car, I think my car needs to see a counselor

I test drove one with the PSE and I can definitely tell the difference in exhaust tone. It is nice to shut it on and off, but I'd likely keep it on all the time...which make going for an aftermarket a better deal. It will be lighter and have a bit more grunt to it.

I've followed the exhaust discussions on this forum with a lot of interest. Seems like a popular upgrade choice is x51 headers, AWE cats and stock mufflers. The stock mufflers keep the car from sounding too loud.

What do people think of x51 headers, AWE cats and PSE? Drive with PSE in quiet mode most of the time (still louder than stock). Go to really loud mode when at the track or showing off....

Ron
