Help - Is this a good deal? First Porsche.
I want to pull the trigger on this car....BUT... i'm worried that i will be paying too much..... I want to buy a car in the next 30-60 days for sure.
My only concern is that 15K is a lot of miles ( I prefer 8-11K) and that is has had body work and it might effect my resale value when i go to sell it.
I would like to get a similar car for 58K (which i lost out to another buyer last week) ;(
anyways... your guys opinions are helping a lot.
I have also called every dealer and lowballed them on more expensive cars and got no bites.
Perhaps I have to wait until the 2009 models start showing up and the trade in start piling up.
But I rather have one now!

I just traded my base o5 997 to jack daniels porsche in paramus nj I have all the info if anyone is interested. it dyno's 295 at the wheels h&r springs short shifter fabspeed full exhaust softronic flash and wicked alignment. roughly 14,200 miles.
The difference between 8k-16k miles on a 3-4 yr old car does not concern me. What I would do is to have a Porsche dealership run a DME report to see the overrev (if any) history. This will give you a better picture on how the car was driven in the past.
Also, are you sure on the 6yr/72mos warranty starts on the day you buy it? All the ext warr I am aware of starts from the new vehicle in service date. Might want to double check on that just to be sure. I am not trying to be a warranty expert but I just never heard of such.
Lastly, no offense but I do not buy the story on the previous damage. A bicycle falling off a rack doing enough damage to justify replacing a fender and a door? And the insurance will pay for it? And at a high end body shop? Sounds to me the seller presumes you will run a carfax on it so he is just buttering up a fender bender ahead of time... I think the damage was a lot more serious, but how much more???
Anyways, personally I would pass on any car with questionable history. Even though this is supposed to be a friend's co-worker or co-worker's friend, but if the seller is not up front right off the bat.... It's a buyer's market so I would look for another car with clean history!
Good Luck!

wow, how the heck can you find a an 06 997S with less miles for 60K???? I looked forever and couldn't even hit $67 for a decent low miles car. Please show me where these great deals are
fyi, yrralis1, i really respect your opinion and info in your posts, but could never find the prices you throw out.

Now here's the current snag -- Most dealerships are low on 997S new inventory with low option cars as the facelift model is coming . What they have is mostly heavily optioned 08's so the used car market bounced up enn though the economy is down .It goes to show that a car which cost less a few months ago can go up too.
Just wait !!!!! That's my advice . When the 09 model comes out the past trend usually has many trading in their cars . Even in a down market --I saw it back when I bought my 02 996.
Lastly -comsider this ... a used 05 damaged 997S gets 60K but an 07 997tt has an ask price of 104K (posted in 997tt fourm) and others are selling at 110?
Why -because the Turbo market is plentiful . It's a buyers Turbo market NOW but it will become a 997S buyers market when that new car comes out .
Not now.
yrralis1,
Thanks for the lead but,I called this guy and the car sold a few months back and he did not want to disclose what he sold it for.
"That information is between me and the buyer!"
I apologized and said sorry for asking.
Jeez...

First I want to say I greatly appreciate your feedback and insight (and from everyone else).
Like I said I'm a newbie, but I have was in sales for quite a while, so I know when sometime you have to be patient to score a good deal.
I think now I will fight my urge to buy this car, and wait until the new 2009 hit the market in September.
I think then I will have more cars in stock and be able to cherry pick the one I want.
I want to get it sooner, but I'm willing to wait to get what I have been waiting for for A LONG TIME!

You have taken a wise step . I would not say this if you were Turbo shopping and I do feel that patience will save you thousands.
I bought mine last month for $68K. C2S 06 with 6k miles. There are any low miles c2s selling for less than $65K. Waiting til the fall may only save you a thousand or so. I don't think the prices will drop to the mid or high $50s. There are 03 - 04 996 c4s asking in the mid $50k so I highly doubt you will find an 05 or 06 c2s selling in the 50s by fall.
good luck.
good luck.
Hi,
I'm new here. I decided recently that I'd buy a used 911S..so I figured I'd register.
This thread seems to match well. I'd also love to get an 05 997 911S..but have reservations about the well discussed RMS (rear main seal) issues. What recommendations do you guys have for new buyers? I was thinking maybe I should get the car inspected by Porsche before buying it. Do you think a seller would split the cost? Should I ask a seller such a question? Also, if a clean 05 997 911S, Fully loaded with about 25k miles is posted for say $65k..what kind of offer should be made?
Lastly, what websites should be used to search for used cars?
Thanks for your input. I'm enjoying reading your posts and viewing the pics!

This is how it played out in the past when the new Porsche came out . Before the launch dealerships clear inventory and sometimes get stuck with a heavily optioned car . People who have the old model still have their cars and are either waiting or in denial that they won;t want the new one . I know this feeling myself . I told myself that i would not trade in my 996 at that time . Ha ha !!! I didn't just walk home --I ran to buy the 997S in August 04 .
I was not the only one . The new car will get a lot of buyers . It may even swipe a few who shy away from the Turbo since the economy is down .
The result --LOTS of 997S cars magically appear . At first the old car takes a big hit . Then after about 6 months they actually go up (like now they are high and they were lower months ago) .
If one is holding a 997S --this is time to sell it for top dollar . If one is buying --WAIT.

If you are buying from private party, make sure you get a PPI (pre-purchase inspectin) at a dealer (not indy shop) and also ask the dealer to run DME to make sure there is no over-rev. I would stay away if the seller does not want to have PPI done. You pay PPI, seller spends the time to drive the car there.
Autotrader, cars.com, here are good sources to find them.

Wilfred gave good advice on this thread (except mileage pricing) .
1) RMS exists but is less common in the 997 line. I faced it with my 996 and it was fixed under warranty . The problem with an out of wararnty car is that an RMS issue coiuld be VERY expensive . The "Porsche" warranty is different than the factory warranty if you buy a certified car . Extended warranty is expensive . Your best route is to buy a newer car or get a screaming deal on a very well kept car .
2) Seller usually won't split cost of inspection.
3) Amost every used car LOOKS clean and shiny on the various websites but when it comes to a used car learn about it first . The best place it at the dealership because you can chat about price , sip coffee , and talk to owners (maybe one will want to sell his car too) . Meet the guys in service too because especially with a used car if pointing at it gets a smile that's good . If you are standing with an owner of the car and the tecnicians who worked on it and you see they have a happy kinship .. that's good too
BUT -- you walk into some unknown used car lot with a sales person who knows ??? .... it's anyones guess.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions greatly. I think I found the car I want. I hope I'm not too late, but am in no terrific hurry in this economy. It has the Cermamic Break package and sport exhaust, nav, full leather, sports chrono, and more. The car's been tracked at least a couple of times. Just wondering, should I be worried about replacing the breaks (pads or rotors)? Also, how much do tires cost on a 05 997 911S? How often do they need replacing? The car also has heated seats, do these reduce driver feedback on such a car?
Thanks for sharing your experienced knowledge with me. Like I said before, this will be my first Porsche and I'm pretty excited/nervous at it.
