Knocking sound in front with pss10 damptronics, any suggestions? (UPDATED)

I have developed a knock in the front when going over bumps that unweight the car a little. I have checked all the suspension components and the only thing i can figure is that when this does happen the springs seperate from the top spring seat and then hit when coming back down causing the noise. This didnt happen when they were first installed and seems to be getting worse. Any suggestion from you guys that have these or anyone would be appreciated. It is starting to drive me a little nuts.

Thanks
Bruce

Bruce,

I had a noise in my suspension when it was first installed and it only occured at low speeds (while parking) and with the wheels turned. I took it back to the shop that installed them, they too checked everything, but it was still there. I decided to drive it a while and the noise has gone away. Your problem sounds weird, the only way to unsettle your suspension enough to get total seperation would be to jump a creek like the Dukes of Hazzard use to do! I would suggest calling Bilstien technical support and perhaps they have heard of this problem before. I would love to know what the source of this noise is.

This sort of knocking - over bumps - is usually associated with wear in the strut-top bearings. They're partly made of plastic and tend to fail, especially when more highly loaded by stiffer than standard dampers. Thankfully they're an inexpensive part - spring compressors are required to fit them so it's usually a workshop job but not a major one.

reuse your big stock factory top silentblock instead of the ones provided with the bilsteins.

Thanks Ian, this makes sense because that was the only so called loose part in the setup. Actually when i got the shocks I had a problem from the start and they were stuck in sport mode which is extreamly stiff. It was driven this way for probobly 600-700 miles here on our rough PA roads until we figured out one of the shocks had a short in it and it blew out the PASM control module. When this happened they all defaulted to stiff mode. I will call and get new strut top bearings and see if that does the trick.

Thanks
Bruce

I have Damptronics as well, but do not have a knock. Would like to know what is causing the problem though. I installed them myself so if I ever develop the problem it would be nice to know what it could be. I hope you guys find the solution.

A trip to the dealer revealed that my lower sway bar link was loose. They tightened it up and the car is perfect, no knocking at all.

Thanks for the update. I'll check that out, but haven't heard the knock since the first day....

I ended using the stock Porsche top hats per eclou's recommendation. Great stuff on this post with pictures and all:

Bruce, happy to hear that it was a minor issue and that the car is ok. BTW, your car looks great! Very nicely done: great wheel combination with the color. Stay wingless and save money!

This happened to me too, apparently the nuts on the swaybar endlinks that Bilstein supplies tend to loosen up when the wheel is turned all the way to full lock.
