997 retrofit nav module - what is involved?

if a 997 does not come with the nav module, what is required to get it working? I know the nav sucks, just wondering what is involved and approx cost of parts. I searched but didn't find any good threads.

Nav unit upgrade

Most of the better Porsche parts dealers can give the info you need. Suncoast has some very helpful folks that can advice you what's involved. Once you assemble the parts, primarily the DVD drive unit, harness and the nav disks you'll need to go to the dealer to get the software installed and the PCM to recognize the nav unit. Not difficult but a little pricey though as I believe the addition of the Nav unit and related disks and stuff runs around $2,000 give or take. You can buy a lot of portable nav units for that kind of money that will work as well or better than the stock unit. But, they won't look as good as the stock unit and won't interact with the display screen in the center gauge pod like the stock unit does. I have it in my car and like it and it works well for my needs. Having had them in several cars over the years including a Lexus, VW and MB I like the Porsche unit as well as any.

Why not save the money and go aftermarket? I just put the Alpine W505 with Blackbird nav into my car and it looks great.

Daytonaviolet is infamous around these parts
if you already have the PCM, then your already 1/2 way there. all you need is navigation module (DVD drive), gps antenna, cable, MOST cable (digital connector), power connector for the drive and mounting braket for the DVD drive. one thing to note is what type of 997 you have as there are 2 kinds of DVD drives. 997.642.157.xx is for 2 wheel drive 997's and 997.642.159.xx is for 4 wheel drive 997's and GT3's. once installed, your dealer will have to update the PCM to accomodate the navigation module. you can buy a used module from ebay for about $800 and then the other misc items you can get new from your dealer for about $150.
