Coupe vs Cabriolet
I agree 100% with this. The Boxster is also an incredibly fun roadster. Nicely balanced, tossable, small, etc.
I'm lucky enough to live in a part of the country that enjoys spectacular weather nearly all year round. So the temptation for another convertible was there.
But I drove the coupe and the cabriolet on the very same day and I could definitely feel a difference in chassis rigidity. That did it for me. Game over.
The Cab is one of the best 'verts on the market today but it simply cannot match the rigidity of the closed roof car.
I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but... in all honestly, if I were going to buy a 'vert I probably would have bought a Boxster S over a 911 anyway since I think the top down lines are superior as is the "designed as a convertible" from the get go.

As others have said here, the choice is more a function of how you plan to enjoy your car, and what other cars you have. I had a cab first (997S) and absolutely loved that car here in So Cal. However, I intended to sell my second car and use the P-car as my only car. I didn't think a cab was as well suited as an only car, partly due to more tiresome wind noise when driving on longer trips on freeways. But for general running around it was wonderful. It may not be a stiff as a coupe, but it is a close second. I opted for a Targa4S, hoping it would be a reasonable compromise from a cab. I'm not particularly impressed with the feel of the awd compared to the cab, so if I were to buy another cab, I'd opt for the C2S despite the fact it doesn't have a wide butt. I think the lines of the cabs make them look bulky enough in the rear that they don't benefit substantially with the wide body. To me, the 1.5" difference in butt width is over-blown, and I'd rather have the nimbleness and weight savings offered by a narrow body. I also like the lines of the cabs just as much as the coupes.
I've attached a couple of photos of my old narrow body cab and my newer wide body Targa. I personally think the visual difference in butt width is pretty minimal. The 3/4" difference on each side starts from about the middle of each tail light outwards. I think the choice should be based more on what drive train you want (awd or rwd) than on the visual difference.
Good luck in making your decision.

In terms of pure performance the coupe is theoretically faster but on public roads few could tell the difference, after discovering them they would end up explaining the differences to their fellow cellmates!
As a DD the cab is not really the place to be, but as a toy it is the car to own.
If you intend to track a lot and mod the car for the track then get a coupe, but for an occasional track day the cab is fine, and as for being slower, that depends on the driver. I would be really surprised if there are many folks on this board that could drive their 997S coupe around a track as fast as an expert driver in a 997 cab.
My cab on the track.

Catch me if you can!

i agree about the coup looking better on the 911's. for voting sake, i'll vote for the cab as i think the cab looks great on many cars. just not my pref. for 996s/997's.
I suspect that the 997 cab is safer than some of those other coupes they allow at the track.
Hey, now that's just cruel!

Well, I guess when I am eventually middle aged and in a crisis I'll be way ahead of the game.. LOL
Woooooooowwwwww. Did you pack a lunch or take the short bus
I agree 100%. Looks like you have a winner cab too. Love that color.
