Its not from a spark plug in the exhaust. Sure, it can be done that way, but Ferraris and Lambos have a tendancy to do it. Its just from a rich air/fuel mix and not all the fuel being burned before leaving the engine, and the free flowing exhaust really helps. You really notice it on cars with the cats removed.

I thought that phenomenon was usually from turbocharged motors when waste gate(s) were opened. Typically when you decelerate into a tight turn.
Putting a spark plug in the exhaust is a good way of destroying your exhaust system. I recall blowing the muffler on my older sister's vintage Pontiac by quickly turning off/on the motor while putting the gas pedal to the metal. It made quite a kaboom until the muffler decided to fall apart. She still doesn't know why she had to replace it. Some things are best left unsaid.

This is also partly the reason for the valves on the oem mufflers (as well as some aftermarket units). They keep some of the gasses within the muffler to ensure they are fully burned at lower RPM's.
So there can be a bit of richness w/in the exhaust.
I would think that rewritten ECU's optomize the burn so well that there are fewer incidences of flames.
I have never experienced it on mine.
