Key question??
Try ebay (I see new blanks w/ master keyhead on there quite often), or Sunset Porsche in Oregon. I've found them to have the lowest parts prices.
You'll need to find a local key shop that can cut the blank using a special mini-CNC machine, costs about $20-$30 for a cut. Then take the cut and assembled key to dealer for programming to your car. $50-$80+ depending on dealer.
I got lucky, my 997 came with THREE master keys!! LOL

I think only Porsche or Audi has the capability to cut the blank. After that your friendly Porsche dealer will want between $75 and !00 to program it. They need to link up w/ either PCNA or Porsche in Germany to acquire/download the correct code for your VIN. OBTW they need your car so if they're busy (and can't do it immediately) you need to arrange alternate transportation.
Bottom line it's a PITA.

I had my 996 master key cut at Santa Monica Lock and Key- The service manager at the local dealer actually told me to go there if I wanted it done faster and for less $.
All that is needed is an existing master key and the key shop needs to have the proper machine. Dealer then needs to program it to your car. I honestly don't know if 997 is any different.

I am in the same boat. Sunset imports said they can cut a new key from my VIN if I supply them with a copy of my registration (key actually cut by Porsche). Here is the info. they sent me:
Key orders by VIN Number for programmable key remotes
Here's the program on ordering a metal key by VIN# from Porsche: We order keys from Porsche using the Vehicle Identification Number from your car. It runs about 98.00 for this to be done. We need proof of ownership faxed to us at 1-503-601-3090 with your drivers license and insurance or registration clearly showing the VIN # to the car and your name on these documents. Porsche cuts the key and sends it to us, usually takes 3-5 working days to get to us. I can cut a copy off of the Porsche made key (assuming that the key is correct for your cars VIN number, if not then I'd be making a copy of a worthless key) that Porsche sends us if you want to get more keys at this time. The only problem with getting a VIN # cut key is if your car has ever been re-keyed for whatever reason without your knowledge, this VIN cut key won't work and we can't refund any of your money. Keys must be prepaid for this reason. When we get the key from Porsche it is only the metal portion of the key, you may need the remote or a valet style of key head which snaps onto the metal portion in order to make a complete key. The key head will have to be programmed by your local dealer. They have to plug a scan tool into your car and all of your keys must be with the technician so they can all be reprogrammed, any keys left out will not start your car anymore since the system won't recognize that key any longer. So factor in about an hour labor or shop time to program this new key along with the price for the parts.

I bet a new key for a Ford Focus is a lot easier to get.
It's one of the burdens of owning a prestige marque automobile. They figure it's no big deal to cough up 2-3 hundred bucks for another remote key.
There is a moral to this story . . . . . Keep those factory supplied keys in a safe place and last but not least don't ever loose one.

I found my key. My son put it in the cabinet and than forgot. Stupid.
"DON"T EVER TOUCH MY KEY AGAIN." I said
When I found it he remembered and admitted he put it there.
BTW. Suncoast has the remote for $125 and the blank metal for $20. Than you have to get it cut. I found a VW dealer to do it. And go to Porsche to reprogram it for about $125 to $150. All in all it would be about $300 for a good deal. (unless you could get a dealer to program it for less, but if you don't buy it there....fat chance)
Larry,
I also called Princeton Porsche for the fun of it. They where the most money. $170 for the remote, $180 for the key and 1 hour labor plus tax. About $500 or so. I said to the guy sacastically "I guess people order 4 or 5 all the time" He replied " Yes they do" 2K in keys....yea right.

There's nothing unique about these keys that isn't in a VW key as well - machined keyway, that not every key shop is set up to cut, and microchiped key-head that is read by the immobilizer to validate the key. The only annoying part about the P-keys is that the validation process needs to be done at the dealer, when the cars just as well could allow the owner to reprogram the car for the keys via a PCM menu and using the keys in the ignition sequentially. Heck, for all we know, thats how it works if you have the magic 'service menu' key-sequence to bring up that part of the system on the PCM.
