Behind the Wheel...09 C2S Cab PDK Test Drive
Behind the Wheel...09 C2S Cab PDK Test Drive
The exterior/inrerior changes were very mild, albeit nice, the LED's are a plus...the side mirrors are huge indeed. The new rims look nice and light but do not have as nice a finish as the twin turbo forged rims (there was an 08 C2S with the TT rims and an 09 side by side). The center stack touch screen is nice but the all black plastic looks cheap...I prefer the 997 mk 1's. The steering wheel on the PDK car is nice and chunky.
The first thing you notice when you fire up the engine is the new exhaust system which is much improved over the current car's (nice and deep and throathy with plenty of burbling). The next thing that caught my attention were the brakes...they felt much firmer than my 07S's...I subsequently discovered that the 09 S's get the calipers from the turbo.
Speed and PDK: The car is much faster than my 07S 6 speed period...and the car I drove did not even have sport's chrono! It just hauls *** plain and simple. The increase in both power and torque is very noticable. Unfortunately the push button's for the PDK were adequate at best for intuitiveness.
The unexpected PDK problem: On three seperate occassions the trans in auto mode had difficulty trying to slect a gear and at slower speeds...the car actaully got a little jumpy after it finally selected a gear as we were pulling back into the dealership parking lot! I discussed the issue with the dealership telling them I hoped it was just an anomaly, but they said "it was normal" ??? I am now even more leary about this first year production especially since it was such a major change in technology from the current version. I need more time with the PDK, perhaps I'll drive the other one next time to see if it may have just been the car I drove. The MPG's were 19 and 26 I believe...not bad at all especially since for 08+ the MPG numbers became more realistic.
Colors: The car I drove was in the new medium blue metallic and when in the sun it truly glitters and is quite lovely, just not for my personal tastes. The interior was in light gray but had the new ventilated seats which were quite nice.
The best changes for 09 are certainly under the skin with the engine being the crown jewel...if the car I drove is any indication of the PDK and early teething problems then I'd expect a software flash sometime in the near future to repair the glitch(es).
