Need immediate pricing advice
Here is my situation. I ordered a car and got very little off MSRP - courtesy discount (whatever the F that means.) As everyone knows, the economy and financial market is in serious turmoil. My financial position has definitely changed in the past 2 weeks alone. I want to get you guys' opinion on if and how I can relay this back to the dealer to negotiate a further (real) discount. I am not trying to use this economic situation to my advantage, rather I really need to save some money on this purchase. Incidentally, I never signed a sales contract or gave a deposit.
Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Axlrod, that is an 08, which is the previous version. I'm referring to the brand new 09.
If plenty of dealers are giving 4k MSRP, is that the proper message I should be saying to the dealer and risk the conclusion that they say, fine don't take the car, we will sell it at full MSRP the same day.

Mass, I see that you're from OC, so I'm guessing its one of the relatively close dealerships in SoCal. Just wound up getting an 07 CPO. Was looking at possibly getting an 09, but none of the dealers were willing to give me squat on the new ones, at least not down here.
I know the California market is different than on the East coast, but I wouldn't buy an 09 w/o 5% off at least in todays market. The lack of available credit is going to hurt dealers worse than the stock market tanking.

That is exactly what I was told and it's a bit frustrating to hear from people in the midwest and east coast who say they are getting 5-8% off which is a substantial savings. It doesn't make any sense to me and the CA dealers won't budge one bit.
I've heard that the profit margin is only 10% on the '09s (less than previous years) so it appears that dealers are not giving as big of discounts and in the past. However, being the way things are, 5% off should be expected, and maybe a bit more, even though the '09 is new. And I know for a fact that 8% off can be had on the east coast.
It's not your typical color and the options are very minimal. Put it this way, it would not appeal to the vast majority of buyers, especially in south ca where many want all the creature comforts: nav, bluetooth, etc. I'm sure the way it's optioned is in my favor in that they would have difficulty selling it, although I really don't want to use that as leverage. That is a last resort.

Since there is a small allocation for the '09s, the dealer's are willing to wait it out and see if those that can afford at MSRP are willing to purchase. If you're looking for a discount and they're not willing to sell below MSRP, I would wait to see how the Porsche car market plays. Higher end vehicles are not as affected as say your typical commuter vehicle, ie Honda, Toyota, Ford, GM. This is one of the reasons Porsche does not offer financing incentives such as 0% APR or 1.9% financing, or $1500 cash back sales summer event. Dealers however, are willing to sell below MSRP of older models on the lot that have been sitting for a while. These are known as their "demonstrator vehicles". Since you're looking at one of the '09s, it would be difficult to negotiate this early in the game. Good luck with your purchase.

Well put and thanks for your insight.
