Track wheels

Looking to get a dedicated set of wheels for the track. From what I researched, many of you run 18's for track duty. Aside from tire selection, is there any reason why the 18's over 19's? Also how important is the weight of the wheel? Not going pro or anything, just looking to maximize the giggle factor and put down some quality times.

just a few reasons;
Tire selection is important, especially if you choose R-spec tires or slicks.
smaller rim = lighter unsprung weight in most cases
higher sidewall profile gives better feel & compliance on the track IMO
Just remember to keep a similar rolling diameter to the 19"s (around 663mm)

Michael I will make this super easy for you. Go to CCW Wheels in Daytona, FL and speak to John (www.ccwheels.com) and pick out either the Corsair 14 or 10 in 9x18 and 12x18 and have him mount Toyo R888 in either 255/35/18 and 315/30/18 or 245/40/18 and 305/35/18...Toyo RA1's work well to. You can drive to and from the track on these R-Compound tires.

You can go 255's and 315's on an CS2 with no rubbing? If I wanted to get a used set of 18 porsche wheels to keep the price down, which would be the ones to look for in regards to weight?

I ran 18" wheels for part of the season, then switched to 19". I found that finding the right size 18" tire was more difficult then 19" tires. I needed a 295/35/18 in R comps was impossible, a 315/30/18 would work but I was limited to a 10" wheel and the tire was too wide.

I actually prefer the 19" wheels, the tire side wall feels much more planted then the 18" tires. I can choose from 4 different tires and I suspect that more will be available next year.

Absolutly...even when the car is lowered. Perfect for a 997S and the fit 9x18 and 12x18 wheels.

Porsche has nothing in 18" wide enough for a 997S.

Van, both the 305/35/18 and the 315/30/18 Toyo R888 or RA1 fit a 12x18 wheel perfectly.

Toyo R888's are imposible to find in Canada, Tirerack doesn't carry them, and I needed to make this descion in June. As well the wheels that I had were 18x10. I am very happy with the 19" wheel tire combo. I will stay with them for now.

How do you keep the dia. the same? by increasing the ratio of the tire size a full inch??

Are you running the stock 235 and 295 sizes? You know those are not real Cup compounds but just PS2 rubber, right?

The Hoosiers will be a MAJOR improvment at the track.

If you only use the r compounds or semi slicks for track only,how many DE's can you get out of a set? I understand certain variables play a roll with wear,but an approximation would work.
