6% Discount on ordered '09 997S - good deal?
Remember that a lot of dealerships carry multiple brands of cars and some of the other brands might be under serious pressure. Quick scan of autotrader reveals that you can buy a new 2009 full optioned Chevy Trailblazer for $36k-$38k. Also listed are used 2007 Trailblazers with less than 10k miles for ~$15k. That basically makes new 2009s almost impossible to move. So if you're sitting cash out of hand for 09 inventory that is nearly impossible to move, the best way to get cash is to try to move the highest priced moveable inventory. The 997.2 clearly falls under that category. I would be pushing for invoice, at least. I don't see this as having any effect whatsoever on resale value. If a dealer has two options - can't pay back bank loans b/c they're not selling enough cars and potentially face bankruptcy or try to turn some car inventory into cash to pay back bank loans, they will try the latter first...In fact, I would be targeting Porsche Dealerships that are part of a larger local dealership that sells brands that must be under incredible pressure - Ford, GM, Chevy, Mercury, Hummer...
Please do not put Porsche in the same category. Porsche is in no trouble at all. They are slow and so is everyone else but they are not in trouble. They manage the inventory very very well. Trust me. Good argument but your way off in your comparison. Trailblazers and 911s are different. So are cayennes for that matter.
Deals are to be had for sure But I still feel that a dealer that does invoice on these new cars is completely insane.
Maybe were lucky but every single S coupe and cab is sold for the first half of the year. 4S's are doing pretty good too. Turbos are all gone. We do have regular carreras available. Porsche of course is adjusting their inventory for the second half of the year and im pretty sure there will not be many left overs. There MUCH smarter than you think.
The sky isnt falling everywhere ; )
I was offered 2% over cost on a new order for a 2009. Not sure exactly what kind of discount that amounts to but somewhere about 8.5% off seems about right (on the base car - options have about 15% from what I've read).
I'd say that was a good deal. In 2006 when I was working in Germany as a diplomat I could get a us-spec porsche for 3% off MSRP. I ended up getting a new 06 M3 for 10% off. Loved that car but wished I was in a porsche.
you should just go out and ask for 15% off.
no one is selling cars and things are likely to get worse.
i'd be surprised if they won't sell it to you for invoice.
sometimes, manufacturers sell manufactured goods at cost just to keep the workers busy and fed.

I think the general attitude of Porsche or any high end dealers is that there are always rich people out there that can afford their car. I find this very annoying.
Smart dealers will be giving tidy discounts as this economy is no joke, there will be no turnaround in 2009 and it will take Porsche months to correct the oversupply, they are good at inventory management but not that good...just look at the deals on 07's sitting on the lot last year as an example.
Clearly you will get more discount on cars sitting vs ordered but I would expect 10% to be a good deal.
LA / OC is getting crushed with home values and job losses so I would expect deals to be had and thats been a long time coming for the bums selling over MSRP!
Best of luck either way!

Porsche is not going to do deep discounts..... They just made a few billion dollars with the VW stock fiasco..... Plus what is difference between 3% or 6%.... not much when you are spending over 100k......
Your math is wrong. The more money for an item, the greater the money saved for every % discounted.
I'm glad to see that argument. Please donate that 3% to a worthy charity since you have so much to give.
