Some tuning advice please

Hi, first post and I thank you for taking the time to help

Between my Father and I, we've had a pretty huge selection of exotica in the past, including a good few GT2's/3's and TT's. I however don't quite have his budget yet! So I'm currently driving (and very happy with) a 2006 997C2S which I bought in September. The wife said she wanted more seats than my 08 Cayman S, so she chipped in and bought the 911 (Family car!)

It's an S with a bunch of extras including the sports chrono but most notably the previous owner had an aftermarket exhaust fitted - the dealer tells me it's probably a Tubi but I need to find this out before I go any further. I've done a few interior mods recently thanks to Eric from Bumperplugs and I'm looking at a couple more engine mods - this is where you guys may well be of assistance

I've heard great things about Softronic and also having spent the day reading up on intake/plenum's, the IPD/EVO MS seem to be very popular.

My questions are as follows :

I'm probably not going to do all 3 at the same time so which would you recommend I should start with?

What are the gains I'm likely to see with these either combined or individually?

Are there any other parts I should consider in lieu of the aforementioned or alternatives?

I look forward to your replies, thanks in advance.

I love your enthusiasm. Glad to have you here!

Be warned: enter this mod thing at your risk- it quickly becomes addictive, and is limited only by your bank account.

Depending on your immediate financial propensity to drop coin, I'd head straight for a SuperCharger and full (headers, cats, mufflers) exhaust system.

I say this having already appreciated the gains from doing an ECU Flash, IPD Plenum, EVO V-Flow Cold Air Intake, Short-Shift-Kit, etc. To date my biggest gains have been from doing an entire race clutch/ lightweight flywheel/pressure plate upgrade.

I'm roughly $9k in on all my mods, and I think if I had it do over again, I'd prefer to drop the $15k on a SuperCharger first. Of course, ultimately, I'd still be looking at the $9k + the $15k SuperCharger.

Good luck, Grasshopper. Read up on this site and you'll soon establish a plan that works best for you- it's a great resource.

Softronic flash seems to be very popular, most people on this forum that have a flash have the Softronic.

There are different opinions on the Plenum, do your research. Personally I am not convinced that it gives gains worth talking about.

I have the Evo intake, and I likeit but I am not convinced that it gives any worth while power. Sounds great with the full exhaust.

Are you using your car for the track or just as a family car/DD?

If you track it, spend the money on the CO's, very good upgrade.

Welcome to 6speed and enjoy your C2S, it is a very nice car right from the start.

Thanks for the reply and the warm welcome.

I actually bought my Cayman S as a gift to myself when I moved from the UK to the USA last year. I spec'd it up with pretty much every option I could ever want and that made it a lot harder than I thought it would be to change to a 911.

However, we managed to find this one which was obviously older than my CS but had a bunch of the options I wanted, only things it was missing were the full leather interior/sports adaptive seats, Nav and the auto dimming mirrors which I had in the CS. It did, however still have the Sports Chrono and something new to me, the short shifter - the aftermarket exhaust just made the deal that much easier to swallow!

I plan on changing the car every 2/3 years anyway so I guess throwing very large amounts like on an SC wouldn't be the best way for me to. My car also was on the Porsche approved list so I have the luxury of another 4 years of warranty (again another reason I don't want to do too much major surgery!)

From speaking to Softronic, they tell me I can take the map with me when I change to a new car which certainly appeals to me. I think I'd like to get at least 2 of the things done at the same time, seeing as the installation for the EVO kit and of course the remap are well within my technical (in)ability!

Are there any sound clips of the EVO kit? My S already gets pretty loud and raspy above 4.5k thanks to the exhaust but I'm a sucker for anything that sounds good

Edit - I use the car as my daily, my wife wanted something that we could drive at the weekend without leaving the boy at home!!

I have a couple of posts which show the details on an EVOMS intake, and the incremental sound going from stock, to Mufflers, then adding the EVOMS:

Thanks again, that sounds fantastic. You're certainly tempting me to go the EVO route

I guess before I get the map from Softronic though, I need to confirm what exhaust was fitted to the car. It certainly *sounds* like a Tubi but I guess I'll have to go hunting for a stamp.

Dave --On my 997S I had the F77 carbon airbox , Tubi exhaust, and Evoms flash . It was great . I did not keep the car long jumping into the Turbo but I was very content with the gains .

It actually enticed me to jump even higher with Hp --and at 700 my eyes are always open to new growth opportunties .

For me the best bang for buck upgrade to the 997S is AWE's FULL exhaust system. This makes the car sound superb (once the mufflers have broken-in properly) and adds noticeable power - you'll particularly feel the extra urge above 4000rpm and the difference isn't subtle. The full system typically seems to give 25-30 (crank) BHP and works very well without other mods.

From what I've read, Softronic are very familiar with the AWE product and can re-map your car to work with it giving you a few extra ponies again.

As for the plenum - I was right at the heart of the debate over this as I bought one, fitted it and found my car to be slower - something I reported on here. I also do drive my car very hard where appropriate and know the feel of it very well indeed. Putting the standard plenum back restored the lost performance instantly. Since then there has been huge debate with dozens of conflicting dyno plots. If you ever have a whole afternoon with nothing better to do, there's a lot of reading material. My personal recommendation on the plenum is 'don't'.

If you're going to change the intake, then expect a nice howl from the motor, but little or no additional perrformance.

All depends on what you want from the car, but if you'd like a much nicer sound than stock with a real, noticeable power hike that makes you smile every time you get your foot on the gas then AWE is the way to go.

If you have a Tubi muffler already, it doesn't make sense to change it. Consider a good set of 200 cell catalytics first and and also add headers if they fit your budget. Do the reflash last.

+1.

Take a picture of your mufflers and we can probably identify them. Add headers and 200 cell cats, free flow intake and then the ECU flash. I too prefer the Softronic ECU reprogram.

Where in Florida do you live? If you are near Tampa I highly recomend Vortex Motorsports for your Porsche mods right down to oil changes.

A note of caution using Tubis with 200-cell cats. I tried this combination on my car (AWE headers, AWE cats, Tubi mufflers) and it's not just loud it's insanity! Also, the quality of the sound isn't good. The Tubis were designed to work with the extra silencing of the exhaust offered by the standard cats and when used as intended, sound superb - they're just a bad match IMHO with free-flow cats.

I have the EVOMS intake 200 cell AWE cat's X51 headers and PSE mufflers and love the way it sounds. Aggressive at higher throttle and good tone when cruising around. I have heard that Tubi's (if indeed that is what you have) combined with free flow cats and non-stock headers can be extremely loud as mentioned above.

If you are able to look under the car and snap a photo, just post it up and as mdrums says we can probably identify what muffler it is. Who knows, maybe you have aftermarket headers or some other mod possibly.

As Ed stated, coilovers should be on your list of to do mods. Since you have PASM, the Bilstein Damptronics would be a good choice!

Enjoy the car and welcome to the forum.

One thing, is it me or are those stock mufflers? It sure doesn't sound stock though...
