I wonder if I'm the only one that found the E39 M5 more fun then the E60, power was there but the car did nothing for me. E39 had a nice raw character.

I'd think so...

E39 = 9.48 lbs/hp
400bhp / 369tq
3792 lbs

E60 = 8.02 lbs/hp
500bhp / 383tq
4012 lbs

for reference:
997 C2S = 8.82 lbs/hp

I've only driven the E39 on track at laguna seca, it was nothing that got me all hot and bothered. Now if you needed 4 doors and were shopping for cars around 2000, then the E39 was the ticket.

I will admit it is a lot of car for the money. way cheaper than comparably equipped Porsches with way more hp. however i will tell you this.

when i drive my 997s, i feel younger, handsomer, sexier, more desirable.
when i drove M5, I didn't feel any of those...
I once again confirmed there is no substitute.
You're lucky,I just looked at autotrader and there were Zero M5s with SMG.

Manual models started at approximately $95,000!...

I'll take two!

That's not quite fair, PDK is dual clutch (like new E92 M3 DCT), the E60 M3 is SMG (sequential manual gearbox). And you can adjust the shifting in the E60 between 6 settings I think, from smoother to rough. Also, E60 has newer version of SMG, much better then first version in the E46 M3. Either way though, dual clutch seems to be the trend, I'm sure the next M5 will have DCT instead of SMG.

Congrats... the M5 is a beautiful car (and practical ). Seriously... it's very practical. I currently drive an 05 M3 with one kid seat in back. In can be tough to get kids in and out. 2 other rides are and MDX and Odyssey. Sadly I had an e90 M3 DCT on order for my wife over the summer when we got the news of an unexpected pregnancy. The pregnancy is cool... just bummed that I couldn't get her the M3. She basically capitulated and chose the minivan (really no other options with 3 kids under 5). Now I'm in the market to get a CPO 997 . Her loss is my gain! I will definitely put at least one kid seat in the back of the 997 (maybe 2). In the end I'll probably sell the MDX and get her one of the new (B6?) Audi S4s when my oldest daughter can go without a booster. I think she'll be happy and I'll be able to go back and forth between an e46 M3 and a 997 P-car if I can pull this off! Congrats again. Glad to see that other P-car enthusiasts have no problem with kids in a 911.

Just picked up an '06 M5 in April. It really is a phenominal car...great power, handles awesome for a 4,000lb car, a sleeper to those that aren't gearheads like us.

Having said that --- I do miss the tossing ability of a sportscar. I will be looking for an '06-'08 used 9974S this time next year. I was behind a cab9974S yesterday and looking at that wide *** made me want one now.

congrats- the M5 is a stellar automobile. Absolutely love it. But, it is a different class of car than a 911. It is really hard to compare one to the other, I think owning both is the way to go . Coincidentally, I was chased down last night by a guy in a brand new black M5, he came along side me at a red light and was gushing over my 997 - wanted to know the mods I had done to it etc etc. I could tell that he would rather be driving my car than his...

e.g. "there is no subsitute"
