congrats on the car! M5 is a great car for the money that they are being offered at now days. I had an '06 M5 and once the lease finished an '08 M6 cabrio. They were giving the m6 away on lease specials. Anyhow, awesome cars, but don't let the HP numbers fool you. IMO a stock carrera S (09+) would pull ahead on either one of those cars. I still have the M6 (lease up next year) and have driven them side by side... take the 911 anyday in terms of performace, straight line or otherwise.

The 997S may be faster to 60Mph, but from 60 up, it has no chance to compete with the M´s.

Don't agree one bit. Top end on the carrera S is nothing less than most of these supposed 500hp cars out there that I've messed with. BMW ///M makes a great car, I've owned several, but don't compare IMO. My experience with my M6 vs. my 09 C4S (both stock) is different than yours must have been.
Unless you mean starting from 60mph? That I haven't tried, but could be true that ///M has slight advantage. But from a stop, with the carrera S with PDK launch control at 7k+ RPM vs the SMG's 1750 launch mode, the BMW will have a hard time catching up if it even had negligable performance advantage in top end. I've taken them both several runs to ~150mph from a standing start. my Carrera bested the ///M6 everytime. Note this was two different drivers, but similar capabilities in pretty much a straight line.
Not trying to be a fanboy for the porsche as I own both... just giving my experience.

Maybe your M6 is not in good shape. Any M5 or M6 will do 0-200Kph in 13 to 13,5 seconds, and the best a 997S PDK can do is + 14,5 sec. I´m not doubting your word, but you should check your M to see if it´s running properly.

Check this video with a 500Hp Gallardo vs 997S PDK from 50 to 250Kph. The Lambo smoked the PDK specialy from 150Kph up

No check this other video on the same event/day, where the Gallardo was beaten by a M6. Note the M6 started to gain from 200Kph up.

And this other video where the PDK totally trashed down an R8

I´m on the market for a brand new 997S PDK Cab, and can´t waite to get my hands on mine ( maybe only in August will be here) but I know my friends, one with a 580Hp M5 and the other with a 500Hp E-gear Gallardo, will smoke me on the straight... Well, if we play 0-100 Kph, I can be faster , but 100Kph up, the M will dessapear and Lambo will gain couple cars.

I have had kids (6 & 8) in my 997 back seat and they loved it.

Has anyone read Vic Ilford's book "Porsche high speed driving"? He tells a story when he drove a 997 C4 turbo with his wife and 2 teenage sons (6 foot tall) thru a mountain pass with snow on the road. Great story.

I respect your opinion J, but will take my personal experience over an internet video anyday
As far as M6 having any issues, I doubt that. Unlike the Porsche the ///M has free maintenance so no reason to not be in shape. Tires had about 5-7k on them, whereas the Porsche had 3k miles since new. Furthermore, I had removed the extra charcoal filters from the M6 right after I bought the car (you can google for the significance of that) which would match it for the most part to the euro-spec ones. In my experience there is no way the M6 is faster from 100kph (~62MPH) +. Also, my M6 has about 16k miles and is the cabrio which puts it a little behind the coupe as far as performance ( I think -.2 sec 0-60mph), but still does not mitigate what I saw. As far as Gallardo, I have some decent experience playing around with my buddy's '07 coupe and yes, at about 525 hp (which may be an underestimation IMO), it will stomp all over the carrera S. No argument there. I will give you that any significant mods to the ///M's and it's a major game changer, but we're talking stock vs stock.

My hypothesis here is that I don't quite believe the numbers quoted from the manufacturer for the ///M's. And this is with my personal ownership experience of a 2006 E60 M5 SMG, the M6 SMG, a 2005 E46 M3 SMG, and (what was traded for my Porsche) an E92 M3 6sp Manual. The e92 ///M3 being the best race car overall in my opinion of the ones listed above. Furthermore, I would speculate that the Porsche is underestimated in it's HP and TQ ratings at higher RPMs.

Would I buy an ///M again? I could see that happening. But my reasons would not be for performance compared to a Porsche. It would be for price to luxury and overall value, which is the race that I think Porsche loses in.

On a side note, there are things that I wish we had in our Porsche's with PDK would be the adjustable SMG shift-times (I think they call it drivelogic?) and a programmable sport mode (like the M-mode button). Also a multi-adjustable suspension setting (like the EDC button in the M) gives it a medium setting, which I found to be optimal for weight distribution during cornering.

Good luck on the search for the PDK carrera... maybe I'm in the minority here but to me there's nothing better than PDK (including manual)... oooh the sacrilege

I just traded my 08 M5, with few mods for a 08 Carrera 4S. I must say, the M5 felt much faster. Maybe its the way the gear's changed with SMG, you get thrown back in your seat with each gear change, its amazing how much power the M5 has at any gear at any speed, it just never stops. As far as the Porsche, it is fast, however it doesn't have that power when you gun it, say at 60mph. What I truly love about my Porsche, I've only had it for 2 weeks, it truly handles like no other! It's amazing how agile it is, no way the M5 could compete against it specially in winding roads. I raced my friends e92 M3 (with several mods: Exhaust, intake, chip) & he could not keep up, not off the line, not in the corners. Which I must say I was surprise, because the M3 feels like it has so much power, but as I said, it has no chance against the C4S. The M5 was more practical, in the C4S (with the aero kit), things I never thought of, are now taking me longer, like getting out of my garage in the morning takes an extra few minutes, as the C4S is so low. But its sounds so amazing ( car has the sport exhaust set up)...... I'm still learning how to drive this amazing car. Definitely looking forward to it.

This has been said in several M5 boards, and it surprises me. I never own any of these cars, but drove both for several days, so my report is based from a limited experience.

The V10 M5 I drove had claimed 580Hp, and while with the TC on the car felt some how tame, due to the fact that even in third gear the damn orange light was blinking, with TC off, car became a huge beast on the road, really , really impressive. I just loved to drive that car, so predictable it made the drive a real pleasure. I can´t see any other car with so much power that you could be driven like you stole it, in such easy and safe way. The V8 M5 was way much slower, almost underpowered, it was so liner you couldn´t feet the power, BUT, it made an engine sound that put to shame the V10, specialy at idle and lower revs. At high revs the V10 was delicious. Manual gearbox was a must on this car, and could it was easy to play with it easily at low speeds.
The V8 M5 was a great car on begining of the century, but totally outdated to today standarts.
Again this is my opinion, opinion from someone who didn´t owned any of them. Maybe with one or two years behind the wheel of both I could understand those who think the V8 M5 is far superior.

I actually almost purchased an m5 over the porsche I own now, I had a deal set and every thing but the seller backed out at the last second because he got an offer for 2k more after agreeing to sell to me. I then got a 06 cpo carrera and love it. plus the extra $50 on gas and $100 on insurance I save is nice to

I have always wanted to own 911 but one thing was stopping me is space and car not being very practical for every day driving. This was an issue until I got married Now I can have 2 cars and will be shopping for ether C4S (PDK) or used Turbo (manual).
I have owned M3 before and friend of mine has an M6. To tell you the truth, I love BMW's, however they can't be compared to Porsches... M6 and M5 are great cars, however I'm not impressed with their handling.

Congrats-I have one of each as well--The car is like no other. Its 2x as muchas a 535 or 528/530 but when you push the car the last 3/10ths it truly becomes a priceless experience. The 911 has the handling feel advantage but take a few "spirited" rides in m5 and unless you are at track the M5 is lights out awesome!!

Nice one! I have to question anybody who buys a car because it makes him/herself feel better, younger sexier etc.

I bought my C4S for a simple reason. It was always my childhood dream to own one. And everytime I purchased something else (M3, boxster S, Lotus, G35, Mini Cooper S), I always wanted to trade it in for a 911. So now I finally have the car that I fantasized about as a child.
