997.2 purchase --creative help!!
ok guys.........need some help
I "need" that new 997.2........its a sickness
Given the economy...i could use a few "Points of View" to help me with my justifications to my wife .
How about
1. Happy Husband = Happy Wife (the old standby)
or
2. If we had put $1 M in the stock market we would have lost $400 K
As we didnt I therefore got the car for free.....
.
or.......please help........any other good rational points?

Reassure her that despite the car's significance only she can stroke your ego well enough for you pledge the rest of your life -- rather than only four years and 50K miles.
Of course the guy who told you this has been with Porsche longer than he was ever married .
What you will find is few jitters like :
1) He loves the car more than me
2) That car might attract the type of woman whom he might leave me for . After all he seems to be after a high priced thrill ride .
3) Why isn't he satisfied living in our little nest withoit this?
4) I feel like flavor of the week in his car but I am his wife.
You may also find :
1) If I can;t beat him I'll join him and support this crazy car fantasy of his
Vs
2) I resent the car and will not allow him to enjoy it to the best of my ability .
Be patient. Be strong. Have confidence in youself .
Let her know that both you and her are king and queen of that castle as well as the little chariot .

I can tell that you are probably NOT married....

Actually I had to pull this off as well, my wife is an attorney so she makes decent money as well- so I just pulled the "We will get a new car for the Nanny as well" card (the Nanny drove a old Mitsu SUV- No Airbags- driving our kids around) so we got her a new Honda Pilot (not actually "gave"- let her "use" a new Honda Pliot) and it enables me on the weekend to drive the kids around in the Pilot if need be (we generally would use the X5).
THEN- I spin it by getting a lower monthly payment for the Porsche and the Honda combined than I did on my BMW 645 Vert that I had just turned in on a lease end!!!
Pretty freakin brilliant- if I do say so myself!!!

The only thing now that the economy has turned and I will have to payoff my Porsche to get rid of it....

BUT- I am having a good time with it and I will enjoy all 150K miles I put on that car....
You can order a new 997.2 now for 10% off, which is unlikely to be available in the future. As the cycles go, so do the prices. Remember not long ago people were paying MSRP for plain 997 products.
The 997.2 has DFI and people are reporting 31-33 MPG on the highway at 75 MPH. It's greener, more fuel efficient than probably your daily driver.
Be rational about the purchase - stick with the basics and don't burn money for nothing. For example, specify it out with minimal options (who really needs all that "stuff" anyway).
Good luck!

In my case, the dealer gave us a 1 hour test drive and we both drove it extensively during that hour. We both got bit by the Porsche bug since all of the other cars we drove after that didn't compare. At that point I convinced her that, if we are going to invest in a depreciating asset, we might as well enjoy it.
I did have to promise to share however!

RonCT,
What do you mean by 10% off for 997.2? 10% off MSRP? I have never bought a new Porsche but an looking at a new 997.2. Do they normally not deal from MSRP? But now they are willing to go 10% off or below MSRP?
Thanks

Everyone has been getting between 8 and 10% off new car orders lately and mine was 10. That still leaves a little profit in for the dealers, but better that than nothing.
I've never paid sticker for any car, including Porsches. In 2006 when the economy was still doing nicely, I got 9% off a new ordered 997S. About a month ago I got 10% off an ordered car. It all comes down to negotiation. If you walk in and say "I'll take that one", they will probably charge you MSRP. If you email and say "I'm shopping the Northeast for the best deal on an ordered car", you will probably get offers of between 8 and 10% (lowed I've heard of is 8% off, best is 10%). Now if interested in a 2008 leftover that's sitting on the lot, I've heard dealers are selling for under invoice, meaning 12-15% off.
