I think I have figuered out what's going on with the rather large difference in oil pressures. When my '07 997S is at FOT the oil pressure at idle is about 1.5 bar and every once in a while during the exact same conditions it's 3.5 and then pretty much pegged at 5 at any higher rpms. I had the same type situation with my 04 MB coupe's oil pressure and it was traced to a faulty oil pressure sending unit and I'd bet this is exactly what's going on here. Normal oil pressure at idle and at FOT (oil temp +/-220) should be +/- 1.5 not 3.5 or higher. See your dealer and get your sending units replaced and watch what happens...

revisiting an old thread, i just had a light go off with the reading "failure, oil pressure indicator".... my oil pressure reads zero... then the light goes off and tachs out at 5... then the needle bounces back and forth...

called my tech who indicated it must be a faulty sending unit. will update once i get the car into the shop.

oil pressure

" then the needle bounces back and forth..."

Do you mean the "bars" jump up and down?

Check "oil pressure gauge" vs "oil level indicator" in The Book joe.

Good news for you (say I w/o knowing what the cost will be...) Tx for posting. This should have been separated from the OP wherein the guy who thought his oil pressure was at 5 all the time realized it just wasn't.

5 bar pressure reading

I had the exact same concern..pressure reading is almost always a 5 bars.

I discussed it with guys who should know, S Car Go (http://scargoracing.ypguides.net/). Their response was "perfectly normal"...regardless of what the manual says it should be. Since then I haven't worried much about it.

I'm gonna bet it reads 0 when the engine is off, goes towards 5 when first started cold, stays around 2 or so when idling warm and swings to 4- 5 when the car is being driven briskly in the upper rpm range. Full throttle will give you full oil pressure. Partial throttle somewhat less. It will fall on trailing throttle. If that for you is "almost always 5" then you are driving your car the way it is meant to be driven

If it never moves off the very top, it is usually due to the wiring getting knocked off the pressure sender, which does not sound like it is the case in this situation.
5 bar all the time hell, don't think I have ever been near there. Can't be good.
