Engine coming out, Should I replace the clutch?
My 2005 Carrera S has 31,000 miles on it. I took the car in for service due to a very small vibration at idle. They said they want to take a look at a cam setting, so they are pulling the engine + transmission.
Apparently they pull them attached, and have no intention on seperating the two.
While the car is out, should I look at getting the clutch replaced, or am I just really prematurally doing unnecessary work? How long do clutches normally last on these cars (Or how long where they lasting in the 996)?

The LWFW is a very nice upgrade!
If you're going to get into the case to replace the clutch, I highly recommend the SachsStage 2, and might as well upgrade to the LWFW, as well.
I bought both from Mike at AWE, above, and couldn't be happier. The LWFW was the best bang per buck upgrade I've done to date.

As a minimum... they should check the RMS which implies separating the tranny from the engine. Re the clutch? it depends. If the car was mine a 35k miles clutch would be virtually new. My clutches last 100k+ miles.
Just wondering - My 997 has had a slight shimmy at idle (enough to gently shake the passenger side seat) ever since day one.
My dealer has always said this is normal (and I've believed them)... but your thread has me worried now... How bad were the vibrations you were experiencing?

I am aware that it is perfectly natural for horizontally opposed engines to vibrate at low RPM... it's just that when the original poster "took the car in for service due to a very small vibration at idle" and the dealer decides to drop the engine/tranny for inspection... I just had to get a second opinion.
Thanks for your input.

I brought my car into the dealer last year for the same complaint right after I bought it. It vibrated my passenger seat quite a bit in my eyes. I had a Boxster S before and thought this might be abnormal. My dealer told me this is normal vibrations too. I know the engines are quite different between the two cars and this is no Lexus but I wanted to be sure. I am shocked the dealer would drop your engine and tranny out for vibrations and would not know what "normal vibration" would be. Has me wondering what the outcome of this will be? Keep us posted what the dealer says. And fast please my factory warranty runs out this Friday!!!!
