key in hand, car still running

I just got a 06 S last month. Sunday on the way to an autox, I stopped for gas. Turned the car off and got out with my key in hand. The car was still running. Dealer says they have never heard of this problem. Anyone have this problem??

The car was obviously bought used, but was it from a certified dealer? And yes I would say this is very strange if not almost freakish.

Very odd indeed. Ignition switch broken? Or some electrical mod gone awry. Otherwise, I don't see how the engine could run without electricity to the ignition system with normal gasoline engines.

I would take it to the dealer and let them fix it.

That is the weirdest thing I have heard of.

Wink

Did you have a autostarter? I beleive this is one of the function you can do with the autostarter. You can still take the key out while the engine is running ...Just like a turbo timer sort of things...cooling down the oil in the turbo while you park and go with the key.

anymods you didn't know from a previous owner??

After i noticed the car was still running, I just put the key back in the lock and turned it off again. This time it worked.

Sounds the lock itself might be a little loose. My old M3 has this issue. If I dont press the key in nice and tight it will turn but without actually doing anything. Sounds like the same thing is happening to you. However, I am surprised the car would run with the key fully removed.....hmmm
