how much should oil change cost?

I was debating going to my private mechanic or to the dealer conveniently located on the corner. I know my mechanic will charge me like $150 and it the dealer is comparable I would just as soon go there for the convenience, however, if they think they are going to charge me $200+ then forget it. What can I expect to pay for an oil change at the dealer? anyone?

$180 at the dealer in Las Vegas, given the amount of oil, it's actually reasonable and I know they're putting in the right oil. If it was more, I'd do it myself, but not point at that price.

The Porsche dealer in Tysons Corner, VA (outside Wash DC) I went to on Monday took about $250+ for it.

I'm pretty disappointed as when I called to ask, they said it would be 'right about $200'

But they will drop me off and pick me up at my office (which is nearby), so that's helpful.

By the way, your independent mechanic probably can't reset the 'service now' indicator on the car which shows up when the car decides it needs an oil change.

Also, if you are looking to resell to a private party, its always helpful to say 'all service done at xyz dealer'as some of the pickier buyers will appreciate that.

Just have your own dealer stamp made: EG "CMOS Porsche".. with similar graphics. Really picky folks will balk if they dig into the service sites, but if you are trying to sell the car to them, you'd be doing the service at a dealer anyway.

Just had mine done this week by the dealer. The cost was $112.50 Cdn. for the oil, (9 litres@$12.50/litre), and $129.00 for labour (1.hr.) which included checking fluid levels and setting tire pressures.

Pioneer Porsche in San Diego charges $400 for an oil change.

I just take it to a porsche specialist and he uses motul and charges me Less than half that for better oil and quicker service.

If the dealer charged under $200 i would just take it there but $400 sounds very unreasonable.

I wouldn't let the dealer touch my car. A dependable & trust worthy mechanic beats dealer any day.

They can suck it for over charging everything.

Spot on. Oil change on the 997 is easy as making toast. More $$ than sense if you pay anyone else to do it. 30 mins. tops.

Ditto on the DYI

Oil, filter and drain plug gasket will take no more than $90 out of your pocket. It's about an hour job at most. The best part is that it doesn't require any special mechanical skills or knowledge. Its one of the simplest DYI tasks. Use the savings to stock up on beer and wine or go out for a nice steak dinner.
