What is a Ruf Porsche? I know Ruf is a tuner but how do you get one? Can you get it Ruffed by a performance shop or do you have to buy it from Ruf?

RUF is inherently a true manufacturer recognized in Germany as an auto manufacturer. I understand that they receive unassembled chassis and primered body parts from Porsche and build the vehicles from the ground up and assign their own VIN#s. They can choose to add or leave anything off of the vehicle that isn't oriented towards performance. Also, clients can order and specify a special, custom Porsche anyway they want from the ground-up if they choose to do so.
In this manner, they follow all TuV and quality standards as any German auto manufacturer would have to follow with warranties, suppport services, engineering/design/safety tolerance testing, quality assurance, and such. Highly interesting, Alois Ruf, SR. started an auto service shop in 1939 then successfully expanded to other businesses including building buses and economy cars based on need and demand. He eventually lead in another business venture of precisely restoring and modifying Porsche in the 1960s. I understand that Alois Ruf, JR. worked for Porsche engineering directly before helping his father form and manage what is Ruf Porsche today (Jr. took over in 1974 upon his father's death). This is just a summary of my recollection. Here's better specifics and info. from their official website (Germany).

Amazing business entrepreneurs that produce well-respected RUF Porsches that truly surpass what any "Tuner" could possibly produce in many discrete ways. I'm sure that any RUF owners can tell you more why a RUF is beyond any "tuner" 996TT in performance and second-to-none in quality, engineering & design.

Well...to second or third what has been posted...Ruf offers one of if not the most fully developed tuned Porsche's available. They are somewhat more conservative than some of the other tuners...but their products have stood the test of time.
RUF is recognized as a manufacturer in europe. You can have your porsche customized by Ruf but it will not have a ruf serial # , although you may get a plaque if they do an extensive amount of modifications.
A real RUF car is built at RUF in Germany....
I remember when my dad was importing cars in the 80's and imported a one of the original Ctr yellow birds from Germany..
It was a nightmare trying get it registered as a Ruf,. End the customer ended up getting it registered as a Porsche since DOT did not have any knowledge of who or what RUF was.....
Things might have changed today.......\
