New 997.1 Owner....bye E60 ///M5
After a winter of deliberating and watching the ///M5 depreciate sitting in the garage as the snow fell I had lost the love for my formerly beloved 4 Dr Beast and craved some AWD 6spd coupe love.
I had started looking at the Porsche last fall and fell in love and spent all winter "internet shopping" and window shopping around town everytime one popped up on the radar.
I decieded I wanted the P-Car and a Carrera C4S was to be my new toy.
After about a month of search I found one in Edmonton (300kms north of where I live). It was perfect, 2008 C4S, Arctic Silver, 997.2 Wheels, 6500kms, local car just traded in for an 2009 Targa C4S (in part how I ended up with the beautiful set of 2009 rims...long story), 6 spd manual, Adaptive Seats, Sports Chrono, and a couple of nice interior touches finished in Aluminum. Without even looking at the car, I put down a deposit and started working out a deal with my 2008 ///M5 in trade.
I had seen what was on the local market for ///M5's and I was even more horrified when I got the "cash difference" required to make the deal work. After a week of going back and forth and finally realizing the "minimum" value my ///M5 would get on the wholesale market we came to a reasonable agreement and the deal was done. I picked the car up on May 1st and have enjoyed every minute of it. The "modder" in me added the B&M Short Shifter, clear side markers and the Tooki bluetooth module at the dealership. The extra treat of the 997.2 wheels (courtesy of the old owner of the car and exchange for my 997.1 wheels and a new set of winter tires for his 2009 Targa C4S).
I had mixed feelings about parting with the ///M5:
- financial loss of only 18000kms of ownership
- fundamentally a beast
- prestige and space of the ///M5
Then I remembered why I fell out of love with her:
- not much fun to drive in traffic and felt like i had limited opportunities to open her up and enjoy the high revving V10.
- my Sepang Interior wasn't wearing well - was starting to get some staining from the oils in my skin, especially on the centre armrest and was starting to blacken no matter how often I clean it.
- fact that I don't need a 4 Door Sedan
- Difficult to drive in the winter and was sitting with x2 sets of rims already
- poor fuel mileage
- lack of car - driver connection.....hard to explain....I so much more enjoyed my E39 with the low end torque and manual transmission, that car was so much more fun to drive vs the E60
After driving the Pcar for 4 days now....no regrets whatsoever, I love everything about the Porsche so far and imho the saying holds true. "Porsche:there is no substitute".
I have been pretty active on the "boards" for a few years now on e46fanatics, m5board and look forward to kicking around here more.
Bye ///M5:

Hello 997:

Great reading . The car looks great with the 09 wheels on the silver car . I can relate to the M5 dump . I had an E39 which I kept only two months back in 2000 . I have an M3 now as a DD and I wish I had a 997S as a DD because I won;t use my Turbo . I just don't love the BMW's --I do like them though .
As you connect more with your Porsche in time the fondness grows even more wheras with the M car the novelty erodes --for me at least.

I guess we can call falling out of love with BMW ///M-pathy....lol.
I was about to say my own new C4S hasn't been modded yet but looking at your pic I just remembered that technically I have my first mod on it
Clear lights! If you like the yellow sides, nothing wrong with that. Otherwise, for like $20-30 pop those suckers out and plop in the clear side lights.

How do you like the Tooki by the way? I'm debating that to use my wireless blackberry with - it's a chore to swap my SIM chip in and out, so I just use a secondary cell phone's SIM card permanently in there - but then everyone still calls me on my primary line and it's a hassle synchronizing my address books between 2 SIM cards.

The tooki bluetooth is great, you would of thought it was OEM with the way if functions, well worth the $ imho.
If you just have to drive a sedan, can't beat an M5. Come home, look at your lady and say - there, you said we needed a "sensible" family car, there's the sedan.
