How to test the water level in the battery..

Does anyone know how to determine if the battery has the proper amount of water in it? I haven't checked mine in ~2.5 years so today I purchased some distilled water and opened up each of the 6 caps on the top of the battery. It wasn't clear how much water should be visible. The owner's manual isn't very clear either. I assume you fill each bank such that you don't see the little metal finger that extends down than hooks at a 90 right angle. If you never looked inside one of the battery banks this probably doesn't make any sense. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Bill

Distilled water should be just at the level of the bottom of the battery fill hole. Should be a kind of shelf at the bottom of the fill holes. You want the water to be just level with this shelf at the bottom of each hole. DO NOT OVER FILL THEM as this leads to the water overflowing when the battery is at operating temperature and as the battery water has acid in it...... the rest gets ugly. I use a squeeze bottle like they put ketchup in a hamburger joint. Allows you to control the amount of water you're putting in.The smaller the hole you cut in the tip of the bottle the more control you'll have over the filling process. Start small as you can always make it a little bigger if it's too small.
