SSK first impressions
SSK first impressions
Installed my OEM SSK today and having never had one before on any prior cars - BMW or Porsches, didn't know what to expect other than the hive mind conclusion here it is the best cheap mod to do and that it's great.
The specs say 25% reduction to throw (although I've seen elewhere mentioned as 35%?) but man, it feels like a heck of a lot more. First shift just felt right and this is how the car should just be stock - I don't see what the down sides to Porsche is if this was just standard? Would there be people out there that say oh no, that shift feels too short, I'd like the long throw shifter please?
Anyway, drove 30-40 miles on it today and it really is a wonderful difference, doesn't seem to feel any different in terms of notchiness - I do easily feel the slightly more effort it takes to shift but pretty inconsequential overall.

Its a great mod. The only down side is there's been times where I haven't been able to put it into first and had to start from second. Even after the car was warmed.
Otherwise, I'd say its the cheapest and easiest mod to speed up the zero to 60 times guaranteed.

Yep that is one 'side effect', especially if you also install the solid shift link. I just row the stick into second a couple of times while stopped and it lets me get into 1st. Great mod though, I love mine.
i bit the bullet and bought one(OEM). have not installed it yet.
i have had b&m and other ssk's before and didnt care for them at all. yeah, they were shorter throw but at what cost. i missed more shifts with the b&m than the stock shifter because you had to hamfist it to get it into the gate and when drag racing, you need slick smooth action, not notchy high effort shifts.
i ended up shortening the stock shifter by a machine shop and liked it tons better but it was still not a properly designed ssk.
i got the porsche shifter in hopes that the factory would have a better designed unit. aftermarket companies make ssk's for tons of cars so i dont expect them to have the kind of r&d porsche would put into one for their own car.
from what i have read, i am probably going to like it but if i dont, im going back to the stock unit and selling an ssk should be very easy

FWIW I've only ever had a stock shifter on this and prior 996, and the SSK feels as slick and smooth to shift as the stock, don't notice any high effort notchy shifts. Just a tiny bit more muscle effort to shift but it's pretty subtle, I think you won't notice after awhile - I just notice it probably because I just changed and I still remember the stock. the part that seems still really new and fresh is how much shorter the throw feels, lot quicker to shift and get back on the gas now.
I also dont feel much difference in the occassional first gear sticking, my stock did that every now and then too and I do what I think everyone else does - just shift into second and then into first. That seems to unstick it almost always.
And yes, I did most of it myself - but it took like 4+ hrs and I paid a tech to stand by to help me and teach me how to do it step by step (although I spent a lot of time just chatting). Getting the boot clips off took a lot of time and getting the shifter off was a pain. Mine seemed welded on even after I released the lock - did the hand bouncing off my rear view mirror thing. Still, a good investment, I figure I can do it myself from now on with my future 911s.

Proud of you, Moz, for doing it yourself- good job! I'll bet you do future mods yourself, too, as it's so rewarding to feel more intimate with your car.
Yeah, getting the shifter off is definitely the hardest part! The conspiracy theorist in me says that Porsche gets them on extra tight ever since Jeremy (I hate Porsches) Clarkson of TopSpeed famously pulled his shifter off during a test drive on tv.
