Problem: the dealer I bought the car from is 1800 miles away and the local dealer wants to trial and error using my dime to replace the front rotors then rears then.....

Thanks

It sounds like a problem I was having with my Cayman. As soon as the dealer replaced the rotors and pads (under warranty no less) it went away like magic. Problem solved. All though I have never stored a car for that much time given that I live in Florida and there’s really no such thing as winter here.

Good luck w/ it and let us know what happens.

In addition, the following article sounds like what is happening to my car. Also good reading for anyone in the future searching 6speed for a problem like this. (Click here)

I will not be 100% sure until I replace the rotors, however I am confident that this is the problem and reading that .003" is unbelievably bad I am convinced enough to move forward with the replacement.

Thanks, I will keep ever one posted with the results.
Thanks for posting the great article.Very informative. Have heard about warped routers for years and this is the first time I have fully understood both the causes of and solutions to the problem.

This is 100% a warped rotors issue. I see this on a daily basis at my shops. Once replaced the pulsation disappears. The only confusion for some is if it happens at a particular speed, ie: 65mph and steering shake, that would be a wheel balance issue. However, if the pulsation is only during braking then its a rotor issue. When the rotor rotates as you apply brake pressure, the brake pads run over an uneven surface, that uneven surface causes a vibration which gets transferred to the steering and you feel a pulsation. Hope this helps, get some rotors and pads (always when changing rotors, install new pads) and get that baby back on the road.

pardon me for my ignorance, but can't you put a dial indicator on the rotor and measure run out? IT doesn't take long and it'll give you the answer.

Take care

Sweeper,

How much is acceptable run out for the 997s? Did you happen to read my first post?

Thanks for the input.

I'm not sure what the spec is, but anything more than a 1/1000th or two you will feel as pulsating. If the rotors are well within spec, as far as wear, than you can have them machined flat again. But this CAN cause more severe warpage when heated through hard braking.

During the process of bedding pads, material is deposited onto the rotor. As an example, if you were to sit with your brake applied after a hard session of braking the pad material will bake onto the hot rotors and you can have a build up in that area. This CAN cause a pulsing, I'd try applying the brake from a high speed, 4-5 times to generate enough heat to "clean some of the pad material" Off the rotor. If pulsing get worse, or stays the same. Time to replace both pads and rotors, especially if it's still under warranty
I'd probably opt for new rotors and pads.

IMO- the storage has nothing to do with the issue.

Thanks Sweeper,

I will give the hard stop a try. I had the car in the shop for an analysis of the problem and they said to start with replacing the front rotors (About $1000) I asked about the warranty but they said no go. After your suggestion, and others, I pulled out the warranty book and it looks like it should be covered for 4 year 50k.

I will call them back Monday and have them check further as the book states that expendable items such as brakes are NOT covered however, rotors are not expendable and even my pads look new.

I will keep everyone posted.

Thanks for the feedback.

Update:

I called the dealer today and they said the rotors may or may not be covered by the warranty however, they will cover under them either way under a "good will" if the factory does not cover the rotors.

They have ordered the front rotors and will call me when they arrive. I will keep everyone posted with the results after the replacement.

Wow, what a day. June 16th (b-day) I brought to the shop for a 3 hour warranty rotor replacement. I think these guys are so accustom to milking the clock they forgot it was under warranty. Should have dropped off but at 1.5hr travel, each way, I thought I should wait. Oh well

Perfect once again, I forgot how smooth she could brake. I was starting to adjust my driving to slow down using the engine so I did not have to use the brakes as much.

Thanks to everyone for the input and ideas.

Yes. Nashua did the job. I am not sure my feeling about the company now that the staff has been cleaned out. Don't recognize anyone. Even Mike and Dan are gone.
