Auto transport coast to coast?

Considering buying a 911 in L.A. and shipping it to NY. I'm from LA so it would be easy to go, check it out and have it shipped back. Which companies are good and how much would it cost? And, of course, is it worth it? Anyone with good/bad experiences to share?

There seems to be not only some price differential, but greater availability in the LA area. I think it would be easier to find a special car in LA than in my neighborhood. Also, it seems that cars that have been driven a bit tend to make better used 911's than cars that only get a couple thousand miles a year.

Thanks for the feedback!

I purchased mine car from FL and had it shipped to Las Veas. I used Exotic Car Transport based in Orlando because Champion Motorsports recommended them. They're service was great and delivered on time without a hitch. It was worth it for me because since I purchased the car from a private seller I didn't have to pay sales tax in Nevada so I used the tax money I earmarked for the transportation cost. I looked locally and in neighboring states, but the car I ended up purchasing had a lot of the features I wanted and some nice mods.

I paid about $2100 for the enclosed transportation and I think that's about the going rate for coast to coast enclosed transportation. Make sure you spend the extra money and do enclosed transport. My friend didn't and had his Mercedes S600 panaramic roof break during the transport and took him over a month with plenty of headaches to get it fixed by the insurance company.

You can try Horseless Carriage. They're based in New Jersey and are considered top notch company. Hope this helps.

Interesting, thanks for the feedback. Yes, to find an Aerokit, you probably need to look far and wide. The cost at $2000 is a bit more than I expected, but I suspect that includes a P car premium. Curious about how you didn't pay sales tax - not sure I could register the car in NY without reporting a sales price which automatically requires a tax payment. I know Vegas is a tax free zone though...

I found that $2000 was the going rate for enclosed transportation cost regardless what car you were transporting, even though most of the cars I saw in the trailer my car came in were brand new GTR and other premium cars.

In the state of Nevada, when you purchase a used car from a private seller you don't have to pay sales tax when you register the card regardless where you purchased the car. I know that AZ and some other states have similar laws. If I registered the car in CA, then I would have had to pay sales tax. Check you local DMV for the tax law.

InterCity Lines is often used at porsche Parade (PCA). They are great and their prices are more reasonable. They may have a PCA member discount, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the tips. I've requested a quote from Horseless Carriage.

No such tax free laws in NY, as I suspected! Only potential benefit is the customary private party exchange...

+1 on InterCity Lines. They transported my car a couple of years ago from Houston to L.A. . . . . They did a great job!

Thanks for the tip. Got a quick quote from them - $1500 coast to coast $150k guarantee with NO deductible. Not bad. Still question whether I want to buy a car and have it shipped back versus buying local, but at least I know the cost.

If you don't go with a recommended/experienced hauler make sure they know how to tie it down properly (hopefully over the wheels). I was with a friend a year ago when his was delivered and they had chained it from the suspension - this from a company that advertised in Autoweek.

Going rate for a reputable enclosed hauler will be in the $2K range. I know a few people who have used the following with great results:

Theres a lot of forum members from Los Angeles and it's not an inexpensive region to shop. Your northeast region has clusters of Porsche dealerships and that's 2K of transport cost plus travel costs right out of the gate . Unless you found the car of your dreams in LA or simply want to mix a vacation with a car purchase then I can't see why you can't find a car closer to home.

You are correct that California has large inventory . So does Florida but all it takes is one car to find its way home to your castle .

What specific car/options/price are you looking for ?

Try waggoners (http://www.waggonerstrucking.com/ ) as well. They are who delivers all the new Porsches the dealership here (New Orleans), and they've never had a problem with them...They do open and closed shipping.

I shipped my car from Miami to Portland Oregon. Cost about $1500. Took four days. Great experience. I'd recommend shipping it covered. All the places I've seen have similar pricing and service. They basically schedule the drivers so each experience may be different.
