Whining sound coming from engine area while driving..???

Hi,

In the past 10 days or so, I've noticed a slight but definitely noticeable high pitch "whizzing" sound coming from the engine area. My car is a 2007 997 C4S, tiptronic.

The sound is apparent only while driving at speeds 40mph+. The high pitch sound is independent of the engine noise (ex. I can put the car into neutral driving while driving at 65 mph and the pitch of the noise will not change at all). However, the pitch of the noise will get higher/lower relative to speed of the car. Tires are proper pressure, lots of tread remaining.

I need to educate myself before taking it to the dealer. Any ideas? Belts, intake, fluids, etc.

Thanks.

Shant

Are your windows open? It could be coming from your outside mirrors, it has been a problem in the past, but I thought they fixed it.

Just a thought.

I've had the "same" problem on and off for 5 months on an 06; particularly when I lift off the gas to slow down - a noticeable (to me) whine that I thought was maybe coming from the tranny. Had my good indie drive it and he said he did not feel/hear anything bad.

Hope we get a good and cheap answer.

Take a look at your belts. Might be a belt is getting worn.

i installed a new intake and the whine from that is INSANE! I dont know if your talking belt whine or intake type whine, but maybe the intake???? If you let off the throttle and keep it in N and its steady after a good distance, rule out the intake, but if you put it in N and its variable, its probably something else.
