997 Cab rear window cleaning tip
997 Cab rear window cleaning tip
This may be a well known thing, but I've not seen it posted so I thought I'd offer it up. Standard caveat: I am not a Porsche certified mechanic and take no responsibility for any damages or warranty violations that may come from this procedure. Proceed at your own risk.
When I first got my 997S Cab, I found it incredibly hard to do a good job of cleaning the inside of the rear window. It's a long reach and I didn't much like kneeling on the rear seats.
When I installed my SmartTop, it required unclipping the rear soft top and it turned out to be remarkably simple. In addition to enabling the installation, I realized it was the perfect technique to access the rear window. You'll also likely find that there is an amazing amount of detritus that accumulates in the cowl-covered section. It's mostly flotsam and jetsam that falls off of the top when it's being retracted. I vacuum out the boot area whenever I clean the window. Yes, it's OCD-theatre, but I suspect I'm not alone!
1. Start the opening sequence of the soft top, but stop it (just hit the switch or switch off the ignition) when the retractable cowl is furthest open;
2. If you look in where the cowl normally is, you'll find that the rear of the soft top is secured by two wire cables that fit over two ***** (one on each side). You may have to fish around in there to find them as they are covered by a vinyl flap;
3. Simply reach in and unclip the swaged cable connector from the **** in the rear section. It takes a bit of tugging, but it's a plastic or nylon pressure fitting and it slips off with no risk of damage;
4. Once you have both cables unclipped, you can simply lift up the rear of the soft top and expose the inside of the rear window;
5. Reverse the procedure to re-assemble the soft top.
