How much do you take off for a carfax hickey?

I was looking at an 06 997 S with 14k miles for $48k. It sounded like too good to be true so carfax shows a front end damage. According to the dealer they had an SUV back into it their garage which they have pictures to document their story.

I ran the appraisal on Edmnuds based on "Good" condition
  • Dealer is just over 49,000
  • Private Party is 47,000
  • Trade in is 43,000
Question is how much does one expect 'off' the car against Edmunds? I'm going back and forth between a 997S and a 996TT. TIA

What do the numbers for KBB have this car at? Based on my research and purchase, KBB private party was a good starting point.

Not sure how much of a discount the damage should factor in (big I suppose).

I'd want to know how much the repair cost- That would be a good indication of extent of damage. If it was just a bumper / hood fix and no replaced panels (at worst a replaced hood) then I wouldn't be too concerned. It is *really* easy for the nose / hood of a pcar to get damaged, most SUV drivers can't see the low front of car when backing up. The previous 996 I bought had a similar report, the bumper was repainted and hood was replaced. Got it for way less than book value and sold it later on very easily for a fair price. One of the best cars I ever bought.

Why bother with one that has a damage history at all? There's too much inventory out there IMO to consider a questionable car at all. If you ever want to sell it you'll be telling the same stories you're being told to another buyer with the same misgivings—too much headache for an expensive car.

if it's just cosmetic and was professionally restored, and you get it closer to $40k, you probably can't go too wrong. I'd be more interested in how much warranty is remaining. Keep in mind you'll have the 20k service coming up, and if the brake fluid has not yet been flushed since new you'll want to do that as well. Good luck on your hunt!

just for starters, if you traded a car in using KBB, they will only give you FAIR condition pricing with no blips on CARFAX. Id say that is you jumping off price

Yeah, got to agree with most here. Forget my post above about looking up the price on KBB. Best to move on. To many cars with little to no issues at great prices to look at.

I've gotten confirmation it's just a dented hood and scraped bumper cover that was completely replaced by insurance.

I completely understand with everyone but IF I can get it for 40k why not? Typically 997S with under 20k miles costs well north of 50k.
