Amber vs. clear side markers

Newbie question: Why do some 997's have amber markers and some clear? Were they really all replaced with clear after the fact?

I bought mine from Suncoast Porsche the day I brought my 997 home. It's a simple swap, about 5 minutes time.

New cars in the US are initially required to have amber lights. In Europe they are clear. You can easily swap them out for about $30 bucks and 60 seconds of your time. I personally like the clear look better, and have swapped out from the amber on all of my Porsches. Go for it...

I always ask for clears upon taking delivery (free) . Most of the amber owners simply don't realize it . It looks the most hideous on a silver car . Amber actually looks great on the nordic gold . It's the only color I would leave alone.

Like others have mentioned...aftermarket upgrade. Dealer usually throws 'em in for free if asked prior to the purchase.

Thanks. The reason that I asked is that the car I am buying has them, and the previous owner does not strike me as someone who would have changed them. I'll have to ask him. Either way, I'm glad someone did.

I had basically the same experience. Just bought an '05 a few months back...car came in off lease, but had clear sides. Seemed strange until you figure out just how quick/easy/inexpensive the mod is.

Doesn't change the fact that it makes a huge difference. My car is arctic silver...as yrralis1 noted above, it's a must do modification for this color.

You all realize... that in the US 'clear' side lights still come with an amber light. DOT requires that light to be amber.

Yep...I realize.

My lenses are clear and bulbs are amber. No intention to change from there...

You can apparenly pick up clear bulbs as well, but the lens seems like the big win from an aesthetic standpoint.

Correct:P I'd strongly urge folks to _keep_ the amber light in there too...
