TPMS question
TPMS question
i was looking on tirerack.com and they list when you search for wheels+tires that you can add TPMS for 400$...
im guessing they are just a generic sensor... but how hard is it to program another set of tpms to the car? i searched back and i saw someone say something about the car "learns" when you put new tpms on the car? but then again im sure it couldnt learn which is which so would need to go to the dealer?
can the car "learn" or "remember" more than 1 set of TPMS is they have to be programmed?
i.e. 1 set in stock wheels (OEM) and 1 set in aftermarket wheels (ones from tirerack) and swap between and it "knows" both sets without getting reprogrammed each time u swap?
what happens in the absence of TPMS on the new cars? if u put on a set of wheels without tpms does it ring/buzz or just not show the data for the tire pressures?
above would be on an 09 car...

I don't know about generic sensors but I have 2 sets of wheels with TPMS. The system learns in couple of minutes after you start the car once you switch to different wheels. You don't have to go to a dealer. I think you have to have BERU TPMS. Model changed from 2008 to 2009. You get a warning light when you run w/o TPMS input.
No need to add TPMS to a 997. It already has it, unless it is for a 2nd set of rims.

Tire Rack sells OEM sensors, which are in the $400 range depending on model (ie: 997.1 are slightly different price than 997.2 sensors). I found that they were the same $ or even more at the dealer, so when I ordered wheels from Tire Rack I ordered the sensors too as they mounted them for no additional price.
No, you can't get "other" sensors and expect them to work with the Porsche TPMS system. I've heard of some people buying a cheap aftermarket system, but that includes some sort of sensor that screws onto the stem and communicates with something else in the car, then you get a little display you have to velcro onto the dash somewhere.

WARNING! Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that requires a sensor to be installed in the tire and wheel assembly for proper operation.
The original sensors from your original wheels can be used or you may purchase sensors from Tire Rack.
Your system includes:
433MHZ TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR
$368.00 for a quantity of 4
REQUIRED VALVE
$32.00 for a quantity of 4
Total Price: $400.00
so i was just unsure if they would infact work just like stock, the fact that the car knows which is where and learns them just amazes me at this point..
since u said u ordered em and they work, ill take word and order them with the wheels... normally like on other cars u have to tell it which is where and program them at dealer and pay them/etc..
i don't know which one you buy from tire rack..400 bux is to expensiv....i found myers has another tpms to buy..should could find cheaper OE replacement sensor to buy...http://www.myerstiresupply.com/shop/tpms/tpms_finder.asp.
I purchased a set for my 997.2 from Sunsoast for about $440. The sensors and the stems were OEM and worked great. It takes couple of minutes for the system to learn the new sensors once the new wheels are installed. Dealers were charging around $700 or higher around in my area. I thought the difference was too much.
