How much MPG to expect?

Hi,

As I enjoy my new old C2 I run it mostly between 3K-5K RPM on a road and noticed that it actually eats a lot of gas.
I think I have managed once to burn almost half of tank doing trip of 50 miles total or so on local roads.

So today I did my regular trip on highway to my in-laws, about of 45 miles total driving without any excess and I see on trip computer estimate in area of 16.5 MPG. I did not go fast, may be 90 top, 75 in average as it was plenty of traffic.

So I burned something close to a third of full tank. would that be expected for calm driving at 2-4K RPM, mostly at 2.5K on fifth gear? It`s just not fun at all to drive with less than 3K RPM. What should be expected MPG at 3K?

I find mine must be getting over 20 cruising at 70-80 in 6th. But the way I usually drive, the car on sport, double clutch downshifting and shifting around 5k, I'm lucky to get 14 mpg. Not exactly that EPA city 18 mpg. I figured the mileage would be better. Now that I own, I don't give a crap and I'm still going to drive it. I bet driving with the sport button on burns more gas too, but I can't drive without it!

EJ-997 is infamous around these parts
On a 40 mile trip and running 60 mph I got 33 mph. There was very little traffic so my average speed was close to 60 mph (cruise control was on). I am not sure the computer is accurate. On the trip back I drove the normal spirted and got 22 mpg. In town milage is 17-19 mpg.

utkinpol you should drive my M5 , i get 9mpg city , 11-13 mpg highway driving and this without aggressive driving , so your 997tt or 997s are blessing on gas milage . it is killing me ,but then again i love her , i think the best 4 door sedan ever. saving $ for my 997tt

+1, The 997 is awesome at almost everything, but fuel economy is not it's strong point. The end of the day, who cares about milage! BTW it does better then my Touareg!

Average around-town driving gets me 17-19 mpg. Around 23 mpg on the highway - with cruise control. I think it get remarkably good mileage for a car with it's power and capabilities. Thank goodness it doesn't have that fake 1st to 4th shift thingie that Corvette's have had for years.
Of course once I put my right foot down, these numbers are out the window. No surprise.

So that's your normal mileage? Man, I'm lucky I have a little 10 mi. highway commute. My average as a result is just over 14...
Good to get the consensus on mileage. If mine is horrible and not normal, I'll tell the dealer and make sure they check my car out. I suspect it is the normal result of using 350hp though...

Well, I just want to be sure engine if is doing OK. It will take some time to get used to it.

Anyway, just drove today again and I think my numbers are OK - somewhat around 18.5 while going 2.5-3K RPM on highway on fifth gear. Today I will finally get my PS2 mounted instead of winter PA`s - may be it was an another reason to get MPG numbers higher.

People here say they get around of 23mpg ona highway - that`s why I was surprised as no matter what I do I cannot get this lower than 19. I tried to reset trip computer, then drove 2K RPM for 2-3 miles - no way, still in 19.x something. So I guess it`s what I have. So it is probably not worth going to dealer with that I guess, 19 vs 23 isn`t an end of the world.

But I guess my car isn`t that new so it is probably expected to have MPG a bit worse. Good to have a reference point though. My lexus on 3K RPM eats 24mpg on a highway and has 3.something liter engine, 997 has 3.6 liter what is not that much bigger. So I was surprised to see such a jump in MPG consumption, that`s all.

PS. To folks concerned if I can afford my gasoline - thanks, no need to worry that much. It was not about money.

In 6th on the highway I'm definitely getting around 25 mpg. Your "instant" mileage on the highway in 6th should definitely be better than 19. Just like my mileage around town should be better than 13!

No, it is not lower. 19.2-19.5 something is what I get, 2.5K RPM on 5th. I turned to that 'from onboard computer' section and did a reset.

I cannot sense any irregularities in the way how engine runs. Compared to other cars I tried while test drives this one runs probably in exact same way. May be it had a bit less torque in 2-3K RPM section but it is highly subjective thing and I did not run it on dyno. Only way to say for sure is to have several cars next to each other on same road and try them one by one. One of local shops had a dyno stand but they moved, so it is difficult now to find one worth going to. And without good readout all the rest is pretty much an empty speculation...

You suggest it may be worth investigating?
