Question: Tire changes in AWD Carreras
Question: Tire changes in AWD Carreras
If an AWD Carrera (4, 4S, or turbo) needs new (rear) tires, is mandatory to replace them always in the front AND the rear at the same time? I know that the rears wear out more quickly. In my Audi Quattro, I have basically to renew all four tires at the same time because of the specific Quattro requirement to have an "identical" circumference on each of the four wheels. Thanks for your replies.

Don't think it is necessary to replace all four at the same time. If the fronts are still good (which most likely will be as the rears wear out about twice as fast as the fronts), just replace the rears. Only thing is that I would probably replace the rears with the same brand as on the fronts. This is what I plan on doing.

Thanks JoeShark and thanks NorthVan997C2S. You guys are the experts and your answers confirmed my thoughts.
Any comments on the basaltblack C4 given in the link of my original post? They are motivated to sell since it's a 'brandnew' 2007 and I like how it's optioned. Maybe Yrralis (Larry) can chime in.

Here's a car in a similar situation near a dealer to me. They got this car in January of 2008, punched it in July of 2008, and have been trying to sell it forever. They say they "can't let it go for anything less than their cost of $86k". They'll be sitting on this car for a long, long, long time if they keep that attitude.

Just my opinion of course.

You should find out if the car has been "punched" and if so, when? If you're not sure what that means, ask the dealer. "Punched" means that they have already started the warranty on the car. It does show that it is a CPO so that is good in that it will give you another two years of warranty on the car. Nice that the car has never been titled so that when it comes time for you to sell the car, you can advertise it as being a "One Owner Car". HOWEVER, I don't care what they tell you, this car is really a "used" car and it should be priced that way. Brand spanking new 2009 cars that have never been punched are selling for 20% off sticker so why the heck should anyone pay 20% off this car that is a 2007. No way. I'd price this car as used and that would put it, hold on to your hats, around the low $50k's. I know you might think that is crazy and so will the dealer. The problem I see for the dealer is if they think they are going to get anywhere near $67k, they'll be sitting on that car for a long time. Unless they find a fool to walk thru their doors, that car will be sitting well into 2010 any beyond.

OMG.....if they wait any longer, they should be able to take it to the auction for a fair price

Thanks JoeShark and phlevin. I appreciate your comments. Joe, you are totally correct, the price is too high for a VERY slightly but nevertheless used (Porsche Approved Certified Preowned) 2007 and I aggree with the low to mid $ 50's K pricing for used 2007s. The warranty goes to 05/31/2013 so that I assume that the punch date was 05/31/2008. The car would have basically almost 5 years of warranty. What about: offering $ 55 K shipped to the door with a set of 19" wheels. phlevin is also correct: the Holberts website shows a mix of pictures: the first three are the adverised C4 the others are from a black C2S. When I first found the car I looking for pre-owned certified 2007 on www.autotrader.com and it had only info for the C4. Here are the options for the C4 from a fax that I received from Holberts:
C4, basalt black metallic, black standard leather, black mats w/ lettering, Bi-Xenons heated front seats, colored wheel caps, Sport Chrono Packagae, Bose, Standard Rocker Panels painted, sport exhaust, thicker steering wheel (MSRP: $ 88,065). I could live w/o the sport exhaust and would have 19" wheels (classics?), PASM, and sport seats but that's ok. It's hard to find any C4 but I like the hips and a C4S is like C$S. Again, thanks for your kind and insightful thoughts.

$55k delivered with the wheels sounds like a fair deal. HOWEVER, I guess it really depends on the dealer. It makes sense to most, but like the dealer that has that 2008 still sitting there, ANYTHING less than $86k didn't make sense to them (and how they stay in business every day amazes me). I guess at the end of the day, it doesn't cost you anything to make an offer. I'd say offer them $52k and come up to $55k in need be. If they are serious about moving that car off the lot, offering $52k or $55k won't make that much of a difference to get them to at least try to negotiate. If they are firm on their price, offering them $52k or $55k isn't going to make them move either.
I understand your feelings on the C4 backend. My favorite angle on my car.
I was sent a link to the thread . There are two topics and I'll answer each.
1) Joe is spot on with the AWD Porsche tires . I am not sure about the Audi (not a big Audi fan) but would like to see it verified in writing by the manufacturer (manual, service manual etc.)
2) I have seen many a dealership get stuck with a C4 or a C4 cab . It's so hard to price the car because usually no one wants it but the one who finally does must have it. The car is rare. The 07 car is two years old and the moment you drive it off the lot it will take an even larger hit . No dealership will sell the car for a big loss . At best expect invoice or even slightly lower . It's up to you . I would pass but if you love it then we can banter about price.

Thanks for jumping in here Larry. This is the one sentence that I've heard from many people (including the dealership that has the 2008 Cab that I looked at told me) that I don't understand. During the recent housing crisis, many homebuilders sold their new houses for much, much, less than what it cost them to build them (I know this for a fact as many of my close friends are builders) just to move the inventory. Why would dealerships sitting on cars that are not moving (especially a "new" car a few model years old) refuse to sell for significantly below invoice?

It's kinda sad but the C4 is not a popular car and quite often the less popular 911 cars pose the biggest challenge to sell . That car is two years old ... looking for a garage that it could call home .
