Good Used Gearbox Required for 997S

Hi everyone

Does anyone know where I might get a replacement gearbox for my '05 997S? (I'm in the UK but don't mind paying shipping)

My gearbox let go when I was driving away from my house one morning last week - there was a large 'Bang' followed by a noise like a ricocheting bullet from inside the box and then it started rattling like a bag of ball bearings!

My local Porsche Indy has just removed the 'box and stripped it. No surprise, 1st gear is missing a tooth. On its own, not a massive problem you'd think, but....... You can't replace 1st gear - it's machined directly into the shaft (yes the gear teeth are cut into the main gearbox shaft - crazy)! And guess what..... Porsche won't sell you parts for the 'box to fix it anyway. New box or do one! Nice guys. This is not only my 3rd Porsche but my last, that's for sure.

So I'm looking for either a) a good 'box off a written-off car or b) someone who does parts for the Jap 'box. If I have to bite the bullet and put in a new 'box, then, well that's life; but I'd like to try to find a less expensive solution if possible.

If anyone knows where there's a 'box or can give me pointers to a supplier of parts, I'd be very much endebted!

Many thanks in advance

I am sure others will chime in, but maybe try talking to Guard Transmission about what you need.

The local porsche dealers don't even have the tools to repair 997 gearboxes - faults mean a complete swap with a factory replacement. Happened on my 08 C2.

Sorry about the loss of transmission hopefully you get another Porsche, but I can understand your frustration.

Not sure this will work, but the folks over at Ultima Automobiles (the folks who build the GTR and CanAm) sell Porsche transmissions for their 'kits'. Brilliant cars and helpful and capable people. They may know how to service the unit - in that their transmissions are rebuilt pieces. About a 90 minute drive from Heathrow.

Edit: here's another http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Los-Ange...-Supercar.html

By the way, I have no relationship - financial or otherwise - with either of these firms. I do hope that I'll be a customer of the Ultima folks some day soon

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

The Independent who is doing the repairs on my car found a 'box at a breakers not far from where I live. The car it's being removed from is a 2008 C2S that had only done 8000 miles when it was crashed (front end) - so the 'box will be an upgrade on my car!

The breakers have done me a reasonable price at just under £2000 - about £900 less than a Porsche factory replacement. Still an unwanted bill, but an 'ouch' rather than a disaster! The 'box is going on my car on Monday and after a week and a half driving a VW with a 0-60 time measured in minutes, I can't wait to get it back!
