Cool Porsche Newbie - seeking advice

I'm now seriously thinking about getting myself into a 997 (pre-owned) but I'm not sure what things I should look out for, what years to avoid. As much as I'd love to get my hands on a turbo - that's probably not gonna happen the first time out of the gate. Though I I am going to try to get my hands on a cabriolet. Now all of that said, I'm hoping you good folk could help provide some guidance here. I made some stupid mistakes when I bought my bimmer (which will be going away to make room for the porshe), and I really like to avoid having history repeat itself. Hence, I'm trying to be good about doing my homework first. On a side note - I would like to have the turbo rear spoiler added as well as some aftermarket rims (any thoughts on sizes would be most appreciated)

Thank you in advance

Are you interested in a manual transmission or the Tip/PDK? If the latter, I would DEF. recommend test driving both PDK and a tiptronic -- I tried the PDK and HAD to have it! (Just bought a used 997.2 S PDK.)

Come to think of it even if you're thinking manual you may want to test drive a PDK anyway just to see what you're missing (since it's such a different experience).

Who did you buy from in Chicago? I am looking for a good Porsche seller.

Thanks.

The Turbo tail conversion is very pricey do a search for posts by Mickfluff he installed one on his C2.

If you are looking at used, I would buy the S, it has a lot more items standard then the non S (bigger brakes, engine size, PASM, xenons)

Good luck on your search.
