Interesting topic. I wanted to buy a toy for a while now. In fact I ordered an Audi R8 about 18 months ago... but the economy killed that plan. So I waited until things financially shook out for me and my wife before I bought the porsche 6 weeks ago. Honestly, I could have bought it sooner, but wanted my wife to be 100% in favor of the purchase for financial reasons. Not that I needed her "permission"... far from it. But respected her enough to wait until the purchase was not a stretch by any means.

Luckily for me, my wife likes cars and has owned several cars with manual trannies. Even though the p-car is "mine", she enjoys driving it. I encourage her to drive it because she looks so damn sexy doing so... but that is another subject entirely.

The topic isn't feminism . It's about the dymanics of the decision of selecting a car for the benefit of the primary driver. In fact if a woman could not drive a stick and the car was for her I would say buy her the Tip .

Don't you think it would be equally selfish if the husband insited that the woman buy HER car the way he wanted it for himself ? What aboit other decisions --can she even decide the food he eats that he may not want so she can have a bite?

So I question .. is it really the guy who is at the root of this dilema ? Does he buy the car because he can't drive stick? Or Does he buy the car to guilt trip her ego ? (being able to contrantly remind her that she got what he didn;t want --perpetuating unhappiness) .

Why can't it be as someone said "my toy" ? She can buy her handbags , jewely, shoes .. and she can enjoy her toys too .. even a tiptronics --if she is the primary driver.

My take is ... As a woman, ur toy...ur pic. My husband wanted a speed boat, i had no interest in at all..considering i love to fish, i would have liked a fishing boat. This was his dream, his toy n as his wife, i agree mutual respect n support in his choice ...as a huge surprize i had the one he picked out delivered. Hes happy n in return makes me happy! Good luck!

I would honestly prefer to tease you now about your auto transmission rather than seriously answer anything above.

[quote=utkinpol;2525436]It just came to my mind that you actually have a car with _auto_ transmission now.

I have three cars (actually four --if one counts the Honda Si the Gf's son drives) .
The M3 is a manual -Gf's primary driver .
The PDK is automanual - My DD
The 997tt is manual - My toy .

Can't speak for others but in my case she has helped me become a more successful; happy person. In raising my kids, in business, in life in general.

I welcome her input because she's an exceptional person. I'm very lucky to be able to bounce stuff off her.
I am with you until it comes to my toys. My wife will never understand my love of cars and watches. On the reverse side I cannot understand her love of Minivans and Horses. So even though we consult each other on most family and household expenditures, my Porsche is my Porsche, and I shut up when she wants to buy a new Minivan. In the end the only car we mutually drive is the SUV.

Welcoming an opinion is a healthy thing (agreed) .
Having someone elses opinion mandated into a purchase is quite another. Especially if the item is bought by that person and he or she is the primary person using it.

This doesn't just apply to cars . One can give an opinion about food in a restuarant but it's quite another to insist that a person order what he doesn't want so she can have a nibble.

This does not sound like love to me but if it comes down to the transmission choice on a 100K car to find it out - I feel it appllies to the 997 forum as being on topic.

sorry...but thats a cop-out.

your in a five-year relationship and you bought non-manual car. Unless you have a physical ailment that keeps you from driving a manual you made a bad choice.

But wait...its a good choice for you...just like the choice of some couples to forego the manual for an automatic (PDK or Step)

See it boils down to there are no bad choices when its your choice.

on the opposite end of the spectrum, when I wanted to buy my Boxster and trade in a BMW 330ic, my ex gave me grief. He drove what he liked and I wanted my car. I've always loved cars! In fact, I had the BMW when I met him and he was driving a Honda. But, when I got the Boxster, he told my sister in law that he could not understand why i wanted that car. He drove it once and hated to ride in it. Anyway, he is my EX. I paid for the car with my own money(I make twice what he makes) and it was a fun car for me!!! Tip or no tip, I got the car I wanted because I wanted it. I had absolutely no support in that purchase. In fact, I picked up the car myself. Now, if I can meet someone who appreciates my car(and me), i'd be very happy!!!!

I don't know about you but faced with the option of teaching your wife how to drive a stick in your brand new Porsche 997 or getting a TIP, I'd pick the later. I taught my wife how to drive a stick in a 1973 VW Bug. Unbreakable !!!

Challenge!!!

On behalf of all of the wonderful women who have been maligned on this thread -- any guy who bought a tip, claiming he was doing it for his wife, is just blowing smoke. He either can't drive a stick, or doesn't want to (for whatever reason). End of story!!

Thebland - I like purses, shoes, cars and more - as do all of my friends! If you want to see how I carry my hermes bags around, just go to my thread in the 997 Turbo section! (and yes, its a manual...)

I have two out my three cars manual . Having more than one car offers a new dimension of choices .
Also the PDK is not an automatic yet I fail to understand why some keep referring to it as such .

Please note the example above -two women have posted on this thread . Both have supported the idea of buying the car that the person loves . Not one woman has come forward to insist that her husband must buy a tiptronic .

Still waiting...

Well maybe since Porsche describes it as such...from the option page...

"Double clutch transmission with manual steering wheel speedshift and automatic transmission"
