"wife + tiptronic" reasoning
would be nice to have F1 tranny option on 911 car.
OK...you win... a tiptronic is not an automatic....neither is a PDK
don't know what either is but their both not automatics....
neither one is a manual but still I don't know what to call them....
Hmm... I'm late to this thread, but I'll answer Larry's question.
I got PDK because I like it better than a MT. One of the reasons I like it is because my wife drives it at autocross too. One of the other reasons is because I'm not that great of a MT driver and I know that. I don't really see myself learning to heel-toe downshift at the track right now... still working on the other basics... maybe one day, but not now.
It's true we could have gotten the MT and gotten better... maybe when we get a 2nd 911, we'll do the reverse of what you did and get a MT

Anyway, I just searched on-line by "Googling" "license plate frames," and there were lots of places that will make anything you want. I believe I got mine from a site called www.gunthergifts.com.
P.S. Even after 35 years of marriage, sporting that license plate
frame on my (our) P-Car really makes the Mrs. smile. Priceless!!!!
I read post after post written by manly men who have waited their entire lives to buy a dream car only to hear -
"but my wife wants to drive a tiptronic" .
Ok -can we talk about this ?
I want to because I don't understand it . I do understand that a healthy relationship is built on mutual respect . In fact if the car's primary driver needs a tiptronic --great... buy a tiptronic . What I don't understand is that the driving needs of the primary driver aren't the primary focus of the purchase.
Also .. I don't understand this "damsel in distress " concept of women portrayed either as unwilling to learn or being so selfish that she woild allow her husband (whom she claims to love) to buy the car he doesn't really want . For her to drive "on occasion" ?
Sometimes I wonder if it's the guy who can;t drive the manual or if he is at the center of this dilema . In fact .. I have yet to see even one woman post about his vs her porsche transmission choice.
Lastly --I see a lot of guys say that certain car's color or coupe vs cab is a dealbreaker . I understand this .
So why is a transmission not a dealbreaker too ? Why not just pass up the car rather that buy the one he doesn;'t want ?
Unless he really does want it . Then why not just admit it ? I have only seen ONE forum member admit that he doers not know how to drive a stick . How many think that number is accurate ?

Actually, I made up the words. I got the idea when I saw a lady driving a big Mercedes with a plate frame that said "I'm not spoiled, my husband just loves me."

Why? A deal breaker is a deal breaker, right? Why would it be worse to be forced into TIP than forced into PDK? It you want a manual, then either way, it is not going to be right, no?
Kind of like "our house", "our bed", etc. Maybe it is a cultural or generational thing...or an artifact of marriage. I grew up like that; in "our house" - had the "family car" - it was "our car" and my dad had the "company car". Kind of like "That 70s Show" -
- no Vista Cruiser
though, but some of "our friends" had them.

Either way --the entire "our" concept can turn very quickly into mine and yours in divorce court .. even the bed.
Reminds me I need to adjust my handbrake somehow - now it has a grip at the very end on its way up. Need to move it somewhat lower.
I drove my previous porsche (6 speed) to SF once, and was paranoid that I would turn onto a street that was a serious up-hill. Plus the crazy drivers, bikes and busses made it a stressfull trip. I take my other car now whenever I go up there.
I drove an auto for 10 years (after 20 odd years of manual). Ordered an M3 with DCT - the DCT because I thought I "needed" it in the city and wife would drive it occassionally.
Then realised she never drove my car since she got her new one. And she suggested I buy a 911 instead. Drove and bought my 1st one - a 6-speed. Commute in traffic every day (4 million people live in Melbourne by the way and our office is in the middle of the city) and I'll never buy an auto again.
Larry - love your passion and all that but I must say a PDK is an auto in my book. Not a slushbox I'll accept but it changes automatically.
Mrdonut - start assist (or whatever it's called) in the 09 cars is on the manuals as well. I know it's not perfect but it does make hill starts a breeze. Much easier than the 997.1

Except for my clothing choices.
