Help me decide - 2005 997 vs. 2006 Cayman S - Reliability/Issues?
I find it hard for someone to pay more for NSX than 997S given the same age of car.
I wanted to say thank you to all you guys who gave me great advice. I found a 96 997 (33K miles today) immaculate for $42K. Its not cpo'ed but still under factory warranty so I am just gonna get an extended soon when it runs out I suppose. Its Silver/Black, not my first preference but I probably my second or third. As soon as I get it (next week). I will post some pictures.
At the end of the day, the 911 is the car I have dreamed of owning as a kid and I still view the Cayman as more of a Boxster. I see the Boxster's selling for 10-12K on eBay and I don't think I could live with that chance on the Cayman.
The Cayman I had settled on was 2006, 27K miles, Mods included Coilovers, Muffler.. I couldnt get the seller down to $35.5K as it was all I was willing to pay. He eventually came down to $37K ((WITHOUT THE HRE WHEELS) but we pretty much stalled there..It is here:

I would post the 997 but I don't want any lurkers out shopping for one to grab it out from under me it over the weekend..

Here are some of the options on it:
2 Owners
- Power Seat Package
- BOSE Surround Sound System
- Self Dimming Mirrors
- Sport Chrono Package Plus
- 3 Spoke Leather Steering Wheel
- Balance of 4yr./50,000 mile Porsche Factory Warranty (not a whole bunch)
- Porsche Stability Management (PSM)
- 19" upgraded wheels
Seriously you guys have been a big help!

Damon,
I posted my thoughts to you on Rennlist. Just get the most Porsche you can for the money. Good deals are going fast as the used market appears to be recovering. Move fast but smartly and dont be afraid to walk away.

Good choice, especially since the 997 isn't modded. You really want the PSM and sport chrono, so that's great. 19's are also a big plus. Would be nice to have the Xenon's, but you've got most of the must have's. I'm sure you can be happy with it if there is no paintwork and it has a clean DME scan.
here is a great car. 2006 c2 with nav and cpo from a porsche dealer for 44K. may be a little far from you but not that far.

absolute no brainer!! 997s
So I have two choices, two cars in similar price ranges. Actually exact same price. One is a 2005 997 with 44K miles, the other is a 2006 Cayman S with 27K miles. The 2005 is out of warranty. 2006 has remaining warranty for a 5-6 months. I would be looking at an extended warranty for either vehicle I purchase.
Both vehicles look to be in great condition with service records.
Basically I would be leaning more toward the 05 997 but I am not sure if it is as reliable as the 06 Cayman. More so with the RMS/IMS issues.
What are your thoughts on reliability and issues when comparing these two models. They are really close in years, is the Cayman going to have the same issues as the 997?
Also a small thing but the 997 has the stock sound system and the Cayman has the upgraded bose. How bad is the stock sound system? I honestly have never heard the stock system. The car isnt local so I cant try it out..
Thanks in advance..

My advice is to go for the 997 - you won't have any regrets! With the Cayman you'll always be thinking if it's Big Brother would have been a better choice. I have an 05 C2S and it is my daily driver and (knock on wood) has never given me any grief. I would recommend going for the Bose. I have the Nav but it isn't something that you use often enough. I actually don't use the Bose that much either - I just listen to the awesome sound of that flat-6 in back!
Get a bone-stock one if you can and when you purchase the extended warranty I would highly recommend that you ask the dealer which one they would recommend. While getting my car serviced I was talking to one of the advisors about a Cayenne that had its engine out and was told that the vehicle has been there for a month because of the extended warranty company was stalling and basically trying not to cover the repairs. Good luck on finding your vehicle - you won't have any regrets once you find the right 997!
