Suspension suggestions

So I have had my current 997.1 a couple of weeks - stretched my car budget to get one, its a C4 (no PASM) and I am very happy with it.......well except for a couple of little things one of which is suspension.

The car sits higher than I would like, but I will never track it or race around the streets, I just like the look of a lower car. I thought the simple and financially reachable solution was a set of eibach springs, but reading the threads I now think that is not such a good solution as there are stories of blowing out the dampers after a while. But then, if I look at coilovers like Bilsteins, they are way out of my budget having just spent out on the car itself. So can anyone think of another solution that will get me the lowered look without either the expense of the real deal coilovers, or the thought of ruining perfectly ok oem dampers ? I am thinking maybe buy used coilovers ?

Keep a look out for used coilovers, that's your best bet, even though they rarely pop up. The next good choice are a set of H&R coilovers. They aren't as expensive as the others, and can lower your car as you like. Check out tirerack.com, or PM Damon@tirerack he can maybe help you out with pricing.

I have read articles in Excellence and Roundel in which the technical writers have said that as long as you do not lower the car more than ONE inch, you should not have any problems with your suspension. No need to replace the shocks. Hence, I installed the Eibach lowering springs. My base 997 was lowered one inch and it looks great. The ride feels just like stock!! Anyway, this is my experience. I did not want to spend a lot of money either to achieve a more cosmetic appearance.

+1 on springs. Talked to head mechanic at local Porsche and he said all good with H&R springs and they wouldn't void PASM warranty (this is up to local dealer.). Car is lower about .7 inch (from 997S height) which is perfect for me. Did myself in about 7.5 hours and ride quality is as good or better than factory.

Given your financial constraints and driving needs, the springs seem like the way to go. I rarely recommend this, but it seems perfect in your case. And playing the chess moves a bit - if you blow out the shocks (very unlikely if you lower .75" or so) you can then either get coilovers if the budget allows, or there are very good deals on pre-owned OEM shocks that are just hanging in the garages of owners who have purchased coilovers.

Thanks again - looks like I will go down the springs route ....and then maybe buy those OEM shocks when I need them

Verde - could have kicked myself when I seen you had a nav module for sale - someone got a great deal there!!
