SSK will definitely make it more challenging. And will also affect the balkiness of the 1-2 shift. I double clutch into 1st if I can't get it on the first try.(rev in neutral with clutch released and then shift)

Thanks for the response guys. I just never had this problem when I had the OEM shifter (not the short shifter) in place. Started to have problems when the B&M got installed...

I agree. What you're experiencing is normal. I'd say it's even fairly normal with most manual transmissions.

However, I would suggest this (as I do with anyone having similar issues). If your car is still under warranty, take it to the dealer and at least make one complaint about the issue. That way, it's documented....so God forbid you have larger transmission or shifter issues down the road, at least Porsche has record of this issue.

I have always had problems shifting in to first when the car is moving. On the street, I would never even try to shift it in to 1st from 25 mph and (in or out of warranty) and would never 'force' it. First time I've ever heard of training a synchro, but it's only something I would do if racing, or on someone else's car.

Like I said earlier, if you can't shift into first gear while moving, even at speeds above 30 mph, you have a problem and should demand that it gets fixed. You should be able to downshift into any gear at a speed that will not put the engine to redline. Read your manual.

The occasionally difficult shift into first gear for a 997, particularly for a car with a short shifter, has been the subject of many posts over the last several years. I notice this every now and then, with 37,000 miles on the clock. It doesn't seem to matter if the car is hot or cold. Let up the clutch, put it back down, go into second gear and it will then shift into first.

Wow, shoot a video of you shifting into 1st at 35 mph and I'll give you as many rep points as I can...

30 mph, shift into 1st gear, let out clutch? this doesn't seem like a very good idea

And, why not? There is no difference going 30 mph in first on acceleration than it is on deceleration.

Yeah this is a strange comment... I realize that most people probably do not downshift all the way to first on a day to day basis but there should be no problem doing this.

My Lotus Elise gives me even more trouble doing the 2nd to 1st downshift at speed (and the neutral to 1st at a stoplight) than the 997 and the Elise only has 4k miles... so Porsches are definitely not alone with this issue.
