Teach me: dry sump, wet sump...

I had a 964 C4 --The oil temperature indicator took a while to move and reach the normal level. I remember the car had a reservoir of oil that needed to be opened with a thermoswitch once the car reached a specific temperature and from there on the oil temp indicator would be constantly working - This is dry sump ?

My actual car is a 997.2 C4S and the oil temperature indicator works the same way. Is it also a dry sump ?

Or what is a wet sump ?

Confused here, but want to learn...

Wet sump

Porsche claims the 997.2 is an "integrated dry sump" which sounds like an oxymoron

The GT3 is dry sump.

I asked a similar question not too long ago, and I believe the answer was that the engine on a 997.2 is a hybrid wet / dry sump. Not sure the details, but I do know it features a variable pressure pump, which is why the oil pressure varies so much under various loads.
