In case you were wondering......

Was at various dealerships over the past weekend looking at a new car for the wife, and decided to trade in my truck. We ended up buying a new Mercedes R350 on Monday. Effemenization of my life aside , I was able to find a few interesting used car deals out there -

#1) 2009 Carrera C4S 3200 miles manual no nav pretty basic at Carmax in Irvine, CA asking $79,999. Judging by how they value trade-ins, I would guess that they paid about $70k for it.
#2) 2009 Carrera S 4k miles manual with nav and a few options asking $79,900 at Laguna Niguel Mercedes, the salesman there is my buddy, and showed me that they took it in for $69,000 which probably includes a $300 pack to the service department.

So, that tell me that I would be able to trade in my car with the PDK nav and $8k GT2 seats for about $75k on a good day.

Good thing I wouldn't think of trading anytime soon!

depereciation is very steep when you drive a new car off the lot, but the free fall subsides once you get beyond that.

cars depreciate 25% when you drive them off the lot but only lose 35% more of their value at the 5 year mark.

in other words, your car is worth 75% of new when you take it home and 40% of new after 5 years on average

It's not quite 25%, but it's some range around there, I think I recall it from a training thing I did not too long ago (guy was awesome disclosed so many secrets of the trade!) that it's 28-33% as soon as it's driven off with. Maybe it was 23-28% I can't recall.

Anyway he was using the story of when he was a GM in a Florida dealership and paid a guy who traded in his Carrera GT only $3xx,xxx even though he sold it to him 2 weeks and 26 miles earlier for $850K. The reason is the valuation goes off the $450K msrp, not the markup price. Ouch!

i got my numbers from a yahoo news story a few days ago that talked about the worst depreciating cars and the above figures were given as averages. i understand its not an exact science though
