Normal Auto upshifts on an incline ?

There are almost no hills in South Florida . Today i found myself on a bridge with an incline for the first time in normal auto mode. At the base of the bridge was a traffic light so my climb began from zero mph. I watched my car upshift while climbing wondering when or if it would stop. 1st gear . then 2nd . 3rd. 4th.

I think the hardest part was watching it shift from 3rd to 4th uphill at slow speed. On went manual mode at this point.

Now i live where its flat but i was wondering how some of the steep hill regions face this . Has anyone gone into 6th gear climbing a mountain?

The PDK shifting is adaptive. Meaning, it changes shift points according to road profile and (important) driver style. The 'driver style' input is measured by the driver's action on the right pedal. I've driven PDK and other adaptive autos on mountain roads and they do not overshoot upshifting with my driving style...

Plenty of hills here - no mountains, but if it ever stops raining, I'm heading to the Blue Ridge.

Adias is correct, no surprise - the car does what you tell it to. Of course, if I were up in the mountains with it, I'd probably go for M as well - I don't see how I could let the car have all the fun.

I too am astonished to watch it shift up and up and up sometimes. But it works and works well. Normally I keep my eye glancing on the tach and don't worry much about anything else. I can cause a 10k shift point difference just by a small change in driving/throttle style. It's a whole new way to learn to control the car - just go with it - don't fight it. Once you see what is going on, it is brilliant I think.

The other thing that is hard to get used to is the gear ranges - with 7 gears, 3rd is not really the 3rd we all know and love - more like 2nd.5 or something. 4th - more like 3rd.5.

Disclaimer: no, I'm not a PDK zealot. MTs are great too - sometimes even more satisfying or engaging (for shirting rather than steering). PDK is just one of two good options for how to move the 997.2.

Perhaps with Florida having no hills and this bridge being the first tall incline made a difference.

I don't get what you mean by a 10k shift diff, but I get your drift. You clearly know how to drive. You understand that the throttle is a rehostat not an on/off switch.

Meaning I can take it easy and the car shifts early or if I get it on it and shift points move up by about....1K - oops off by a decimal point, above.

Shifting into 3rd @ 30,000rpm - whooaaaaa that'll rip your head off.

gjnockie is infamous around these parts
Larry, I think you would have been happier with a manual in your C2S. I think the PDK just bugs you in a lot of different ways.

It's mixed sentiment . There are some tremendous positives with PDK too and those positives reveal the nehatives in the manual .. and visa versa .

The paddles helped a lot because driving it in manual has become more pleasant .

Is the little upshift arrow head on 6-speed cars connected to this? I think it appeared on MY09 as I dont recall it being on my MY08.

Thing is, I'm often surprised at how early it suggests an upchange at low revs. Of course in my 6-speed I can ignore it but if it's using some of the same sensors as your PDK cars use to change gears I can see why you've raised this thread.
