ess04 is infamous around these parts
Thanks for the help. This is my first Porsche...it sure is thirsty, but I'd say it's a small price to pay for the incredible driving experience.

oil

FWIW, not advice, just to confuse you more:

My 2006S, flashed, etc., generally Florida car

1) My tuner/maintainer ( part time Rolex driver, former Porsche tech now with his own shop) checks bars after an oil change and 10 minute drive; gets it at the mid point - once he drained out 2 cups since it was at the top.

2) Blasphemy, I know, but he uses 15W-50 on almost all of the Porsches he takes care of. Main difference from 0W-40 is much higher viscosity at startup (131 vs. 78 at 40C) and a little higher at operating temp (18 vs. 14 at 100C). I would not agree with him on this if it were a Northern car, but after the break in a few years ago I've never had to add a drop between changes.

Mobil does not make 0W-50 and 5W-50 is hard to get, otherwise I'd guess he would use it but I never asked.

You don't need an oil change.. why would you think you needed an oil change? What you needed was more oil. With the acceptable oil consumption rate being as high as a quart in about 750 miles, you can go 4,000 miles and burn a few quarts and that is within operational parameters. Just add oil.

But just add the needed amount. Don't go dumping in quarts ***** nilly.. follow the instructions. Probably 1/2 quart at a time, if the light came on for low oil, then when you start seeing bars on the meter ... add 1/4 quart at a time until you get in the middle of the range at least and then stop. (Of course on HORIZONTAL (not same as flat) ground).

A little more than the average speed limit? Really? I'd not say that driving 2x+ the posted limit is a little more but way over. 80-90 is a little more.

It takes almost an hour on a 997.2 to get all the oil out even when hot. It is real easy to overfill the engine, especially if you go by capacity instead of by the measurment.

To add some more insight, I noticed I went through oil more when I moved down south from the mid-atlantic area. (summer move) Anyhow my oil read low, and I added a half quart, let it run through and settle and gave it another read. Ultimately I need the whole quart!

To me 2 whole quarts is alot being from NY? Since you got an oil change anyhow, see what happens over the course of a few months. Did you take note of how much oil the dealer needed to replace? Also are you running sport mode all the time?
