New to the family...few questions for the team:

2 weeks in...C2s, 9K...sticker was 107, paid 55k. Don't think I got a fab deal and for the first time in my life, I don't care. I'm simply delighted.

Normally by now with a new car, I "get" all there is to "get" with my machine...this one's different. Different in a good way. While this car is precise, I am still learning every time I interact. I can tell already, I'm a fan for life.

Have a few rookie questions:
1. Car wasn't put in service till feb of 2007, so factory warranty is good till feb 2011. Should I look into buying extended warranty from dealer now or wait closer until warranty expires?
2. Oil was changed at dealer last year at around 5K miles. Dealer suggests every 10K, but would you recommend I change oil now anyway? Also, is this a difficult DIY job? Require special jack? Cost savings for DIY vs. traditional local lube shop?
3. Already have habit of doing 100+ on freeway...I notice I have to manually open the spoiler. Is this required at this speed? As a rookie, I don't notice much difference between it engaged and not engaged...
4. iPod integration...notice there are a few opinions for brands on this. Do you have to have a special device installed or are there simpler kits at best buy you can buy without installation?
5. Radar...same question. What's the downside of buying one that plugs in cig lighter. I love my cubbie space below the pcm...

Thanks all!

Welcome to the forum!

I like to change oil every 6k miles or every year, whichever is less.

The spoiler should go up automatically at 75MPH and come down around 40MPH.

Casey Jones you better watch your speed!

Spoiler has been auto as long as I have ever seen them - could be dead - warranty, good to have!

Radar in the cig lighter socket is awkward with the cable running all over - easy enough to hard wire it: http://www.teamspeed.com/forums/997-...smartcord.html

Search forums for iPod - most seem to favor Dension from what I read.

To the OP: Nothing wrong using a V1 connected with a cord to the passenger power outlet. Permanently attached detectors are thieves magnets.

Contact Bumperplugs.com to integrate an iPod Dennison unit.

Welcome aboard .

1) I would pass on extended warranties . The cost and headache of evaluating the coverage seem steeper than finding an honest and resonably priced skilled technician.

2) I change my oil every 7500 miles OR 1 year except on my Turbo where I decrease it to 5K miles .

3) Spoiler ought to rise automatically .

4) Don't know enough to comment.

Congrats on the new car, I am assuming that it is an 06 C2S.

I think that warranties are great, if you need them. I would find out what is available, and then wait and see how the car is, if it is constantly having issues, buy it. If it isn't then leave it.

I change my oil every year or 10,000 miles (16,000K), I track mine car a lot, and don't have any issues at all.

Spoiler is set to rise at 120KM/h or just under 75 mph. I would have a friend follow you and see if it rises, it is impossible to see from the drivers seat.

I have the Dension Gateway 500 www.dension.com/index.php?pageID=11 it integrates via the CD Changer connection and is controlled through the PCM or steering wheel controls (if you have them). It is simple and it works, I bought it from Eric at Bumper Plugs, but you could get one from a local car stereo shop as well.

I have a built in radar detector, I can't be bothered moving a unit on and off my window, it will get stolen eventually if you forget it up there.

Question 3) FYI: the little LED does not come on in the button when the spoiler deploys automatically.
Just in case you were watching for it to come on.

Is there any indication that the spoiler is up when you hit 75?

1. No dont worry about it

2. I change my oil every 3000 miles or after each track day. First of all, and this is just me, I look at these 10K-15K oil change intervals as more of a marketing scheme than anything. Second, fresh oil goes a long way to keep everything nice and lubricated properly (read IMS bearing).

Its an easy DIY and I recommend Motul Xcess oil over Mobil1 due to some better adatives. Also, you can get a Magnetic drain plug and race filter conversion kit from LN Engineering. Its Porsche approved so dont worry about that (the oil is).

3. Me too

4. Dension

5. Valentine V1.... use the lighter in the pass foot well or hardwire to sunroof.

Great responses all - thank you! I assumed the indicator light would come on when spoiler is up...by the responses, it appears as though this is an automatic occurence. I went ahead and changed the oil today with Mobil 1 synth. I feel like I was raped by paying 175. What's the going rate? If I bought materials and did it myself, seems like it would run about 75. Am I right?

When I look out the rear, if I get up in the seat, I see just the edge of the rear lip in the window. If you know what to look for, you see it.

Unlikely ... or broken - check your owners manual - the talk is all about what it is supposed to do, and does do, under normal circumstances.

Yeah $175 is theft...

I changed my own oil for about $75 with Mobil1. The filter removal tool is about $30 from Suncoastparts.com and pays for itself after the first oil change. The oil change literally took me maybe 30min.

1. Back the car up onto ramps or jack up the passenger side. Use a jack stand.

2. Put oil pan under drain plug. Remove drain plug with hex/star socket. Oil comes out very fast. Do not remove oil filler cap before draining or oil will come out too fast.

3. With filter removal tool remove filter housing and filter. Replace filter in housing and O-ring.

4. After oil stops draining replace drain plug and filter housing with new filter in it.

5. Have 9 qts available of your favorite oil. Put in 8 qts right away and then check the electronic reading. Grab a beer while you wait for it to calibrate. Then add .25 qts at a time until you have achieved a full system (3.6L and 3.8L have 9 quart oil systems and probably .25 or .5 qts is "trapped" oil). If you over fill, simply remove the filter housing again and poor out the .25 qts of oil contained inside.

Repeat every 3-5K or after every track event.

Yes, it is an 06 c2s. How do I know if I own a 997.1 or 997.2?
